Default how does speedometer function?

Here is ANOTHER Noob question from efftrain:

so i decided to change the color of my needles on my gauge cluster. so i put my needles back in.... and everything except the speedometer seems ok to me.

WEll the problem is.... i don't remember how it used to function, never thought about it. here is a list of things that are bothering me:

1) when driving in reverse, does the speedometer do anything?
2) when you brake, does the speedometer go towards zero quickly, or gradually, and if you are stopped, is it still moving down, or already at zero.

any help would be most appreciated.

try taking off the needle again and cleaning the pin that it goes on. it might just be stuck. When i did mine i had problems with it and it took me about an hour to get all of the needles right. Just play around with it, you will get it.
Good luck

1. no, speedometer does not work in reverse.
2. speedometer is supposed to tell you your forward speed regardless of what you are doing (rolling down a hill, accelerating, cruising, braking, stopped).

i've seen some interesting speedometers in my day. my friend had a 95 grand am, that, when he took his foot of the throttle, would slowly drop down, and bounce up, and down and eventually settle at zero, while the car was coasting at like 40 mph.

then one time i had a toyota corolla that said i was going 70 mph before i had even pulled out of my driveway, and when i came to a stop, the speedometer said i was still going 50 mph. and then when i left the stop, i was going 120 mph. quite a peppy little car.

Thanks all for your answers:

1) I guess no one really realizes what's going on in the gauge cluster during reverse, i assume most people would be looking in the mirrors. (Unless you are an actor in 2 Fast 2 Furious and are driving a suped up confiscated EVO for the po-po)

2) I think my speedometer is registering the way it should be. Unfortunatly, the FDR/Harlem river drive (my route to work, and the exits signs are marked off at 3/4 miles away and 1.25 miles away, and my brain can't compute 5:30 in the morning) doesn't have highway markers so i wasn't able to travel at 60 and count and see if it's accurate. It looks about right. or i'll let you all know when i get pulled over.

Yes i have an overactive imagination. =)
