Default Key

When I bought my car (07 tC) it only came with the valet key. I bought a key off eBay and got the lock/unlock/etc part programed (disappointed it doesn't honk the horn or beep). I haven't gotten around to programing it to start the car but thought in the meantime I would at least get it cut. I have been to both a Home Depot and a lOwes and both said they cannot do it and recommended I go to a locksmith. I said I didnt need it programmed just cut and they said same thing. Any thoughts on why they cant (other than m not buying the key from them)?

Yeah I am getting the feeling they wouldn't do it simply because they did not sell me the key

Try showing proof of ownership.

Don't think that is the issue. Gonna try Ace Hardware and see if they will do it.

My Ace Hardware has a whole wall of keys.
They handle all the Car Manufacturers and cut the keys on the spot.
YMMV..

They don't know whether you're the owner.

That is not the issue, I have an original (valet) key. They would not know I am the owner even I bought the replacement key from them.

I went to Ace and they cut the key for me for $3. They did not program the transponder though. From what I gathered they would not have a way to ring out the labor when the cust. brings in their own key. Their sku is a package that includes the key and programming for $149. Either that or their machine is only set up to code their keys. The fact they cut the key tells me they prob would have programmed it if they could.

Anyway, the key is cut now so I will google to see if I can program it myself (thought I read that was possible) If not $149 is still cheaper than the dealership (maybe less if I shop around).

Glad to hear you got it cut. Here's a demo (if you have the security system with the blinking red light on the heater control panel.)

Good luck.
