Get a sub that matches the amp or preamp you will be using.

In general, a 4 ohm sub (or speaker) will require a stronger amp to drive it. But, of course, strong amps need strong speaker.

yea but i have a dual voice coil sub. should i parallel it or put it in series or in parallel/series? would it be better to have an 8 ohms, 4 ohms, 2 ohms or .5 ohms? i have a 1000 watt amp with a 1000 watt sub.

Depends.

Rated 1000 watts @ what ohm? Is that a mono or stereo amp? If stereo, is it going to be bridged?

That will tell you which speakers you need and how they need to be wired to get the most from your amp.

First, find out how the amp is rated. Do not wire the sub at a lower impedance than recommended by the amp manufacturer.

4 and 8 ohm impedances are almost always safe- going lower can lead to problems with many amps...

A single dual voicecoil sub can only be wired two ways- with the coils in series, where 2 each 2 ohm coils would give 4 ohms, or 1 ohm wired in parallel... just an example...

Lower is better, if you want to get the most juice out of your amp. If you have a dual voicecoil sub you can set it up to run 8 ohm (in series) or 2 ohm (in parallel) or you can run one voicecoil @ 4 ohm x2 to like a 2 channel amp but I wouldn't recomend. I have a dual running @ 2ohm and I fried my first JL e1200 a/b mono amp so I replaced it with an a1200 and it seems to be running fine and cool. The wattage is 275 max @ 2ohm, 175 @ 4 ohm. I hope this helps though I am no expert.

ok. What is the modle of the Amp you have, what the modle of the Sub/subs you have.

Let us know that and we will sort you out. Unless you give us details, we are as lost as anyone else.

you can either bridge the amp and wire the sub to run at 8 ohms or you can run it off of 1 channel and wire the sub to 2 ohms. either way the sub will be under powered though. a mono amp that can match the rms of the sub at 2 ohms will give you the best performance. i reccomend an infinity amp or you can get an audiobahn amp to match like the audiobahn 8000t.
