Default replacing stock subwoofer

just wondering anybody out there ONLY REPLACED the little stock 6" subwoofer with another one 6" sub like this JL one

http://cgi.ebay.com/JL-AUDIO-SUBWOOFER-6-SUB-75W-6w08-NEW-6W08_W0QQitemZ250298754845QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item250298754845&_trkparms=72%3A1205|39%3A1|66%3A2|65%3A12|240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

i don't wanna get an amp and mount it somewhere, hoping this will work?

Assuming that the mounting depth of the stock box is either equal to or less than the ED style stealth boxes that are going around, that JL might fit...
If I were to guess, if any difference, I'd say the stock box has a more shallow depth... so it might not fit.

I know the stock sub doesn't look from the outside like it's all that deep.
Does anyone know how many watts that little stock amp pushes?

Get an ED box and put a smallish amp in the spare tire or under a seat somewhere if you don't want amps exposed. That will kill replacing the 6" sub.

yea i think that that JL one that u r looking at will be too 'long' the stock box is gonna be deep enough...

but its just my judgment

Regardless if it fits or not, the stock amp will severly underpower any sub other than the stock one. As was mentioned above, a stealth box is your best bet for hidden, but effective bass.

DIY The cheapest way is to use the foam box/ stock sub box as a template and build a box to that size.

i know of the perfect sub as a replacement

Kicker CVT65 ..

http://cgi.ebay.com/KICKER-CVT65-6-5-4OHMS-300W-SHALLOW-SUBWOOFER-NEW-08_W0QQitemZ380066675486QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item380066675486&_trkparms=39%3A1|66%3A2|65%3A16|240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

you could also go with the Kicker SSMB6 they are mids that will get the job done and you get 2 for the price of one of the CVT65..

http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-KICKER-SSMB6-SS-FREE-AIR-MID-BASS-SUBWOOFERS-6-5_W0QQitemZ130259609004QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item130259609004&_trkparms=72%3A1163|39%3A1|66%3A2|65%3A12|240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

CVT65 -150rms watts / Frequency response: 25-350 Hz

SSMB6 - 125rms watts / Frequency response 30-500 Hz

both will give you some serious improvements over the stock sub with a amp.. i would imagine they would sound better even with the stock amp.
i would go with the CVT65 even though its the more expensive of the 2, its just better suited as a sub as it can hit lower frequencies.

I'm interested to see how this works, so if you try it, please do post back with your results (and pics!). I still think this sub would be severely underpowered with the stock amp, but I guess you can try it.

im pretty sure the stock sub is 6.5"

also this sub will be very underpowered with the stock amp so i would recommend getting a amp too

a Kicker zx300.1 or a Rockford Fosgate p300-1 would match up nicely

If you start replacing the sub (~$60) and get an amp to go with it (~$100), you're looking at less than a hundred more to get an eD box with an SQ-10 and an amp, and I would much rather have a 10" than a little 6.5" sub back there.

a edbox setup would cost more than double. the box and sub alone is $205

~$160 for this setup, or ~$280 for the eD setup. I suppose if you're very budget oriented it might be worth it, but I still think the eD setup would give a superior response that would be worth the extra cash.

good information guys. i'm not on a budget really. my problem is, i just don't want to mount the amp anywhere, not even under the seat or on top of the spare tire. just don't want to drill holes anywhere (for now)

so whether i get the 160 or 280 set up, both, i will still have to mount an amp

also, is the stock sub box hollow? if possible find the smallest amp (dimensions wise) and mount it inside there? just an idea

Even the smallest amp will take up valuable airspace in those very small boxes. If you don't want to mount it because you don't want to drill holes into your car, mount it to a piece of wood that is fitted to the inner diameter of the spare tire. That way it will hold still, while remaining its ability to be pulled out cleanly.

lwy72243,
You can easily mount the amp to that board that runs along the back of the rear seats.
The holes are almost invisible when you take the amp off, because the board is carpeted and it basically hides the holes you drill...as long as you don't use huge 1" wide screws or something crazy.
