Simple answer, buy a 6spd car instead. A lot easier than a swap.

Long answer, what you're asking is can you use the 6spd trans on the 2.4L. Not sure myself.

It's not that I want a 6 speed car it's just this car in 5th gear runs at 4,000 to 4,500 rpm and that isn't right .

There is plenty of info out there if you search. A company used to make kits.

You can also get a 5-speed box out of a Camry or 2nd-gen xB and get the much taller final drive... that will solve the cruising RPM issue and get you a lot more MPGs. But the car will be slower in every gear.

Rpms shouldn't be that high if you're driving the maximum highway speed limit. One way to try raise speed and lower rpm is doing an e351 swap, and or getting taller tires. 50+ sidewall.

I'm on 255/40/17. Overall a bit taller than stock size seems perfect to me.

I second the "changing of the gear" idea.

Ive flirted with the idea of having just the 5th gear lengthened by a custom trans shop since all 5th is truly used for is OD.

If you do a lot of highway driving it may be in your best interest to seek that route out. After a while, the $$ spent on just the one gear mod, would end up paying for itself.

Have you looked at what the pricing is for swapping the whole trans out?? Im going to venture to guess considerably more than modding a part or two in the existing structure...

Here's a post I made on the subject a few years ago. I'm still toying with the idea, but it's low on the project priority list.

Nice write up ben!!

Yeah I read about the Camry gear before... but I was looking at a completely one off gear (custom gear altogether not found on anything Toyota) to drop the RPM's in 5th.

I don't want to change the final due to the extreme fun I have with the "peppy-ness" of the first four gears... I just want to change the OD gear (5).. which is to assume what the OP wants to do...

... and doing basic math on a cross country trip (2,594 miles ONE WAY!!) I was averaging around 36 mpg on that trip cruising at 68 mph!! Id like to push the highway number to around 40+ mpg on long hauls like that (ive done it 6 times now....), again assuming what the OP wants...
