It has nothing to do with "breaking in your engine" its all a matter of gear ratio. My 5speed tC compared to other cars is geared crazy low. 3k @ 60ish is like my dodge ram was with 4.88gears. I'm thinking the tC is geared with differential ratio like 3.96 or 4.11. The auto is lower revs because the gearing is different...its the ratio why we get crummy mileage compared to a honda's too.

I still love me tC though....geared for corners I keep telling myself.

I wouldn't mind putting in a taller 5th gear in my car...getting it down to like 2k at 65 or so.

I think if you are driving on the highway you can get 250 miles on what looks to be a half a tank. If I fill up when my gas gauge says I have half a tank I put in about 8 gallons. So figure thats about 31mpg for 8 gallons of gas.

At 3000rpms I am doing 65mph I checked it this morning on my way home. This is with a 5-speed

Yes, changing tire size will change the speedometer. I have 19" wheels and my girl (another 5sp 05 TC) has the stock 17" wheels. We both have navigation units and can verify that her speedo (the stock one) is actually 3 - 4 mph slower than actual speed verified by the GPS. My car (with the 19's) is dead on as verfied by the GPS. I've also spoken to a Toyota technician about this and he confirmed that ALL Toyota speedometers ship factory slow 2-5 MPH to allow a "schwag" as he put it. I feel that it's to keep us lead foots inline a little bit, but who knows the real reason.

Just my .02¢
