Annoying noise while driving..

My tC makes this annoying sound while i'm driving. When I turn the steering wheel to the left it gets louder. Has anyone had the same problem or does anyone know what the problem may be? I thought it was my tires, but that's not it.

DJ08tC 04-10-2009 03:34 AM

steering pump maybe?

shupes31 04-10-2009 03:38 AM

Same exact thing. Like a humming almost?

It's the wheel bearing.

Kvizzel 04-10-2009 03:40 AM

What's the noise sound like?

Ms_Falan 04-10-2009 03:46 AM

how much do u think this will run me?..i just got $650 of work done on my car today..

shupes31 04-10-2009 03:47 AM

Mine replaced with a NAPA part with lifetime warranty was 400 bucks.

The whole hub has to be replaced, not just bearings.

Ms_Falan 04-10-2009 03:54 AM

it's like this loud humming noise..along the lines of an exhaust..but at a steady pace. make sense?

SW_08 04-10-2009 03:56 AM

sounds like it could be the wheel bearing to me....

shupes31 04-10-2009 03:58 AM

Yep, definitely the wheel bearing.

InfideL 04-10-2009 04:03 AM

I had that...is it more like a grinding noise?

Bad wheel bearings arent the worst thing in the world, they are annoying though. Some people have gone another 20,000 miles on them. Get it checked out and then you can decide if you want it fixed right away or not.

That's not the easiest one to diagnose on here...as when a wheel bearing starts to go out...there are a range of "noises/sounds" it can make. But if you think that is what is going out and not something else...do NOT wait on it. I've been wrenching for many moons...and what happens if you let a bad wheel bearing go w/o replacing it...it will adventually seize itself onto the shaft...then it's an absolute PITA to get off...you basically have to take the whole assembly off and have an auto machine shop pull it off with hydraulic press.

TylerC08 04-10-2009 04:26 AM

x6853216 that^^

you know there bad when you have it on the lift in 1st gear and the tire(s) aren't even moving...lol

Mouse 04-10-2009 04:28 AM

^^ well it takes a lot of heat to actually seize the motion of the wheel....but what usually happens when someone ignores a bad wheel bearing is the outer edge of the bearing expands from the heat of going bad....and seizes to the hub.

TylerC08 04-10-2009 04:32 AM

yeah, i've had bearings seize up on the hub and ruin a quattro system.

something you really shouldn't ignore even if it's minute

Ms_Falan 04-10-2009 04:33 AM

thank u guys for responding..i'm gonna have it checked out tomorrow.

Mouse 04-10-2009 04:34 AM

good deal....it's a small part that is fairly cheap to fix before it goes out and seizes.

dang_khoa84 04-10-2009 04:16 PM

If your tC is still under warrenty...the dealer might be able to fix it for no charge. I have a wheel bearing problem from my previous car which I caused it by hitting a sidewalk....bring it in a dealership said I didn't do anything with it and of all certain I hear this noice. They charge me not a penny.

It also depends on the dealership too tho.

Lil_Deuce_tCoupe 04-10-2009 04:34 PM

I have an annoying noise when driving too, but it seems to occur only when my wife is with me.........

:silly:

BZinn1 04-10-2009 09:54 PM
