Default Copy of my spare key, how do I?

The original master key is broken to my 2006 TC, long story, but anyways I went to my dealer to get a copy of my spare key. They won't do it because the dude claimed that I need the original key. I don't have it anymore, so basically this spare is all I have. If say I were to lose this key, I'm screwed? Right? The original would cost $250 range, but a copy is around $50.

That's strange because the big deal is the transponder chip and it's present in all keys including the valet. Unless it's some security measure to keep people from taking someone's key and getting a copy made without their knowledge. In which case... I'm sure speaking go a manager, explaining the situation, and showing proof of ownership like the registration should suffice. other options is to buy one on ebay, have home Depot do the cut and read on the forums about plucking the chip out and transferring it.

. Why is it that they simply can't make a copy of my key I have? I don't have the original key. Lost it. Anyways it shouldn't be such an issue.

Not all tCs are equipped with an immobilizer. In these cases, the key chip is only for remote/ keyless entry. A regular key would work the manual door lock and ignition.

If you already know you have an immobilizer, a plain key probably won't help. If you're unsure, a ~$2 key from the hardware store won't break the bank, even if it doesn't work.

OP, do you have a "spare" or a "valet" key?

I thought the same thing until I drove my (no immobilizer) Camry with a plain key.
