ELECTRICAL issue/problem/question!!!???

Ok here is the deal....when i first got my car a couple of months ago, i plugged in an aftermarket cheap POS cell phone charger into the front cigarette lighter. It was okay for like a day but then i noticed it a slight burning smell....i checked out the charger and sure enough it was so hot it was melting on the side. It wasnt serious enough to get on my car but if i didnt recognize it, it might have been bad. Needless to say i have yet to but anything else in there. I have used the cigarette lighter itself and it works fine.

So here are my quesions....(little worried since that one fire that happened)

1) are the cigarette lighters suppose to work after the car is off...because it did in my last car??? (this question isnt really a big deal just curious)

2)Could it possibly be that the cigarette lighter is fine but the charger was to weak to recieve the current?? (not sure if that makes sense)

3) the reason i am asking all this is becuase i just got the OEM led interior light kit and i want to install it. But i want to make sure that this incident is just a fluke and my car wont mysteriously catch fire. What do you guys thing???

PLEASE anyone with ideas or help is appreciated!!

the lighters are off when the car is off

does the charger cord do the same in the plugin in the armrest? if it does, could be bad charger.

of course, it's under warranty, have the dealer look at for sure.

as far as actual pro electrical advice...not enough experience here....anyone else?

In the TC, the Cig lighter only works when acc is on or car is running. No key, no power. The proper tap for the lights is the cig lighter wiring (use a fuse).

The charger you had is like any other power supply, some are good and some are just cheap electronics.

You should be fine as long as you install it per the instructions, tapping into the cig lighter line and use the fuse holder provided with your kit.

The fire thread fluke is just that...a fluke and obvioulsy tapped into the wrong power line. There should have been no power to that cig lighter with no key in that car.

This is pure guess on my part, but I suspect that the cell adapter probably had a bad inverter on it, and *that's* what ended up causing the problems.
