Default Gas mileage and your tC

So I have an 05 tC with a little over 120,000 miles on it. The other day I decided to see how many miles I could get out of a tank, so waited until my next oil change and I began the experiment. I drove at no more than 65 mph, I controlled my braking, and acceleration so that it wasn't too abrupt, and I got 401 miles out of it the first time. I thought this was kinda crappy seeing as my friends 2002 Maxima 3.5 gets more.... So I tried my experiment again and this time I drive like normal (75-80 mph on the highway, and no particular attention to how I stop or accelerate), and I mentioned to get 398 miles outta that try. I feel as if I could've matched the previous attempt but I decided to fill it up anyways. I am now doing one last trial and I'm not going past 60 mph on the highways to see if a more "sensible" approach is the answer. Anyways I'm gonna post the results as soon as I'm empty.

How about you all tell me if you have bested that record, and if so how were your driving patterns, gas used, mods, etc.

Thanks

That is a cool experiment, I always feel that I get very bad gas mileage in the streets, but in the freeway it seems ok (75 - 80mph cruise). I never really measured it like you have, but in the streets I don't get the best gas mileage by the way I drive my car.

In fact the other day I cut this lady off and I actually saw the needle drop a tiny bit afterwards. However when I am short on cash and I need to conserve some of that fuel I notice a decent improvement lol. I have around 13k miles on this car and don't travel long distances with it much, mainly used for around street.

As for driving patterns when I drive normal I mainly shift around 3k rpm, however when I drive more aggressively I try to stay away from redlining the motor, I usually shift at 5k (maybe 5400) with about 80% throttle. This is me driving it 'hard'. As for braking I don't brake hard unless i obviously need to, I like to let the car slow itself down whenever I have the chance. I don't drive fast and brake when you cant go any further because there is a car in front of you, that is just pointless.

Before I get carried away giving you and this thread too much pointless bull ill just finish it here.

Take care.

[I drive an 08 tc standard]

it kind of depends on where youre driving. obviously if youre on highway like 95% of the time, youll be able to get past 400 miles per tank if you keep at a steady 60-65. I once filled up in for a roadtrip, 100% highway driving and set off...made it to the destination some 450 miles away and had about a little less than 1/4th left. going 60-65mph cruise control on about 75% of the time... thats roughly 33 mpg...

only mod i have is a TRD cold air intake and a TRD exhaust...using 87 octane.

on a more regular commute, ill average about 360 miles before i fill up. but my commute consists of hills, highways, and city driving so not the best for the mpgs heheh.

I have 113k and get 28-30 mpg on a 30 mile commute each way and driving about 75 mph.

I usually fill up right before the light comes on or a little below the quarter line.

Great feedback. I guess I forgot to mention the environment I'm in. I live in FL, so it's all flat, no hills. I do at least 65% of my driving on the highway so I like to keep in on cruise most of the time. I usually shift at 2700-3400 rpm, but for this experiment it's more like 2000-2500 rpm. I always use 87 octane. Very rarely do I put anything higher than than.

Yup depends where you drive.

If you Freeway drive you will get GOOD MPG's

If you take city streets you usually get BAD MPG's.

Wow! I barely manage 280 miles on a full tank! I zero out the odometer once I fill up and 280 is pretty much the avg. My best was 300 miles on a full tank. I use shell or chevron. I drive pretty slow so it is not my driving.

I average 220 miles per tank, well before my gas light comes on (70% city driving.) All highway doing 60mph, I managed 350 miles out of that tank.

After owning my TC for 5 years, I actually, for the first time, managed to hit 510 miles with a single tank! Before anyone calls bs, let me give you some background info. First off, this was ALL 5th gear highway driving at 65mph, in cruise ctrl, it would be impossible with stop-n-go around town. Also, I actually went until I completely ran out of gas on purpose (spare ½gallon in a jug in the car).

When I lived at sea level in Florida I had pretty much the same story, about 325 to 350 miles to the tank with average driving, stop and go around town, running 93 octane, with only a Injen SRI. But then I moved out to New Mexico a couple years ago, currently living at 7000 ft above sea level and have since added several mods. Also, I have to run 91 octane out here because it's the only premium available out here. I commute 50 miles to work and back each day (100 miles total), once again all highway driving.

The mod's I have now that have increased both power and mpg:
Injen SRI, NST 3-Pulley set, DC Headers, Invidia S-Pipe, Unichip (tuned to 91 octane)

Other important factors:

Weight reduction: deleted spare tire/jack, deleted back seat, VIS carbon fiber hood

Tires: Yokohama S32A's all filled with nitrogen to exactly 34 psi

Oil: Royal Purple 5w-20 full synthetic. Also, imported a bottle of RS*R ran-up from Japan

No parasitic loss from a/c. I go to work early in the morning when its still cool, so I didnt have any mpg loss from the a/c being on.

Altitude: At 7000ft above sea level there is significantly less oxygen than at sea level, (hence the 91 octane), and the ecu/vvt-i pulls timing to balance out the air/fuel ratio, which gives less power to the engine, but also has a slower burn rate on fuel. Also, the less barometric pressue/oxygen density there is, the less air-mass resistance the car has to endure.

And here is the rest of the story: I set out on a quest a while back.....my best friend lives in Dallas and has a 2005 STi putting down right at 400whp, its a beast and he constantly raggs me for having a tc.....so my quest (which is still in progress) was to hit at least 200whp n/a, seriously upgrade the suspension, and get incredible gas mileage, in order to make the car respectable from a performance standpoint. The suspension is coming along, and I'll find a way to finish getting all the way to 200whp n/a, but everytime we talk about our cars, he cringes when I mention that I just hit hybrid territory by getting 38mpg, meanwhile he gets 17mg on a good day in his Subie.

Additionally,

When I'm not trying to feather the throttle and set mpg records, I get about 425 to 450 miles to a tank (mostly highway driving in cruise ctrl.)

At some point tho I want to set an even higher personal record for mpg. Here are some things I plan to do that should at least slightly increase my gas mileage even more:

Enkei RPF1's (less unsprung weight= more mpg) will have these soon!
More carbon fiber (hatch, fenders, doors)
Port and Polish on the engine (better flow)

My goal is to eventually get a solid 40mpg highway, while still having a car that has power, handles well, looks sharp, and isnt a Prius.

Lastly, if anyone happens to be skeptical, they are welcome to a) duplicate the set-up I'm running, b) stop by my neck of the woods and we'll drive 500 miles together, or c) I'll be happy to post pics of the trip meter/odometer, but I suspect anyone could fake that so what's the point. I really don't have any reason to b.s. this story tho, it's not like we are comparing big hp numbers, I really just want to put this out there so that others can try some of these mods and get a little more out of their hard earned dollars when they spend it on gasoline.

I get 385-400 miles out of a tank consistently. About 27-28 mpg on 87 octane. I use Pennzoil Ultra Class Synthetic and my only engine mod is a Tsudo midpipe.

If i did alot more highway driving i could get up there. I get about 28 mpg highway doing 75mph. But 85% of my driving is city so its only getting about low 20's majority of the time.

I've done the conservative feather-foot before and achieved great mileage returns, but it's just not very fun! Spirited driving & ~10mph over on the highway put me at right about ~320miles per fill-up, and I usually dump in no more than 11 gallons. So that's what, ~29mpg? Fine by me.

not sure how many miles from full to 'R' as i dont like to get below 1/4 tank but i did about 1000 miles of driving last weekend to northern wisconsin and back (mostly highway minus the suburbs of chicago) and i averaged anywhere from 29-34 and that's with a lot of weight in the back (3 subs, 2 amps, batter, and sub box). car has almost 46000 miles on it (200 and runs unleaded w/ mobile1 full synthetic oil

Before boost, I got around 27-28 mpg, that's city and highway driving. in MD.
After boost, I get around 22-23 mpg, city and highway, only 7psi though, lol.
And both are with constantly running the a/c
