How Often should I really get my Oil changed?
So I've taken my tC to get the oil changed a few times and Toyota keeps writing down to come in every 3000 miles. I asked a guy at the dealership, "Why do I need to come in every 3000 miles
when Scion says to change it every 5000 miles?" His response was, "Well since we live in Utah, we are subject to more extreme conditions so we have you come in every 3000 miles because of that."
Is this a bogus answer or is this right? I'm pretty skeptical so I take it in about every 4K miles. Anyway, just want your opinions.

3000 miles is the earliest that you would change your oil on regular dino oil. VW suggest 10K miles in between for my wife's Beetle on regular oil. Their filters are rated for 30K kilometers..roughly 18K miles. So which car company is right? While I don't agree with VW's endorsement of such intervals between oil changes I think the truth is somewhere in between depending on your engine use and type of car.
I think the Utah Toyota dealer is playing it safe. You do have some harsh winters in UTAH. 3,4, or 5K on regular oil is just fine. Maybe change it more often in the winter if you want peak performance. The Tc is not a high performance sports engine. It's a rugged camry engine tweaked to last the life your car and some. Weather you change it every 3,4,5k miles, I am positive your engine will last just as long and perform just as well.
Do whatever makes you sleep better at night. In the end its your car and your money. I change my own oil and I use Mobil 1, and change it every 8-10K miles. Too scared and not cheap enough to test the 15k mile claim of Mobil 1. I just don't like changing oil every 3k miles, kinda of a pain when you drive 2k miles a month.

and yea, but at 3k
oh ill wait till 6k
see the difference?
er...well thats my understanding.

Premix = Putting oil in the gas and not running the stock oil system.

pretty much go for 4k! it evens out between the 3k-5k . my dealer said to go w/ 3 for the driving conditions around. my dealer said the recommended oil change from the manual was pretty much for perfect diving conditions so they said to go w/ 3k since its safe (and they get more money.)

Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I still change it every 3K to 3.5K miles. I'm sure 5K is fine too. But I also feel it depends on the type of driving you put your car through and the environment.

i go when the mait req light comes on. about every 4500-5000 miles.
interestingly enough, car and driver's long term bmw 3 series, had an onboard computer with an oil change algorithym that didn't reccommend an oil change until about 19,xxx miles.
