most hp gain for your $$

ok what do you think the best thing you can do for you little 1.5 for some more hp gains with minimal $$. plz list product and cost. thank you :D

:edit: and if you can do it yourself ^__^

bofa 07-02-2004 07:05 PM

How much you spending?

For $200 or less, CAI System... maybe 3 HP

For about $400, ECU upgrade (voids warranty).. usually 10-15 HP

For $500 or less, exhaust system...maybe 5 HP

For about $1000, NOS.. can squeeze up to 80

For about $4K, turbocharger!.. for about 50 HP

For about $17K, go tC... for about 50 HP

for about $195K, trade the b!tch in and get a Porsche GT2...for about 470 HP (I'll install this one for ya)

Hope this helps. :D

There are no cost effective performance modifications for these cars yet. Spending $50-$100 per hp gain is not cost effective.

Read the posts on the intake shoot out and header posts, those will give you an idea of what's avialable and what you can expect.

10.5:1 compression? On what motor? These things run 9.6:1 compression ratio. Thats fine for minor boost with a turbo or supercharger. And you are an absolute ___ if you run 50hp nitrous on a dry system. The factory ECU, Fuel pump, Injectors cannot flow enough to keep up with that and you are running far to lean. Thats fine if you want to/plan to blow up your motor.

Why do you think the Blitz supercharger only runs 30hp boost WITH a piggy back ECU? The rest of the system can't keep up with it. At best for reliable HP, you could run 20-25hp dry shot of nitrous. And thats only because these Toyota motors are built so well. If you add fuel and controller for it all you could probably get into the 75hp range with the stock bottom end. But you'd probably want to do a staged nitrous system if yer going that route so you don't bend rods.

Don't trust anyone telling you stories, do your research and make sure you know what you are doing before you do it. Most the people that will give you advice will give you BAD advice. Call the guys at TRD, they are available M-F to help you plan your motor build. Call the guys at Blitz, Greddy, Nitrous Express, or someone equally reliable. People that have actually worked on these motors, and have seen what other people have done to blow them up.

Hey bro the 1NZ-FE has a 10.5:1 Compression. Do your research...

BTW: My 1981 Toyota Corolla Station Wagon has a 9.6:1 Compression.

thanks everyone. i tihnk i have learned not to expet much from the little scion's engine, well at least for now. ^__^

chewd0g 07-04-2004 07:46 AM

Shoot I think this thing gets up and goes STOCK!

It's just a matter of maximizing the RPMs in each gear. It's no BEAST by all means, but dang for 108hp at the block you get every bit of those HPs when you run through the gears!

WildBillT 07-04-2004 08:27 AM

On the dealer spec sheet, the xB is rated at 10.5:1 compression. That is why the people who have nos, turbo/supercharger on these keep blowing out their head gaskets. That isn't cheap.

they have Starlets here in the states?

tckurt 07-04-2004 06:51 PM

well a header and intake aren't too pricey and always try http://www.redlineoil.com/ its supposedly increases hp and exhaust and the trd clutch only cost $329 and that would help and a new flywheel also... other than that only a supercharger will help...

BTW, its roughly 10.5 to 1, I've actually checked compression on this thing.....if you really want to blow your econobox up got ahead and put 7psi or better on it. It'll take it.....once. Ideal compression for a turbo car IMO anyway is about 8:1.
Hey Kid, there really isn't a route to cheap speed, especially if you intend on making this car an everyday driver. It's a helluva lot cheaper to look cute than go fast. If you spend bank on a turbo kit, pistons, rings, rods, injectors and a pump and then drive it back and forth to work/school everyday, you'll likely end up rebuilding in a year.
Once again, just my 2 cents...

toyota isn't bad.

dude, outkast i think you're on the wrong forum, this is for people that love toyota and love scion, not call a great car a turdcel, and want to blow up our very pretty cars, they aren't made for speed, if you want a fast car, <Shrug> build one from scratch.

cost effectice upgrades:

injen short ram intake: 160-180
this is a great small upgrade for the box

magnaflow cat back exhaust: 390-450
the first true cat back exhaust system for the xB. one of the better upgrades out there.

precisionmuffler.com Axle back: 250.00
the best alternative to the magnaflow cat back

Header: 160-200
DC and E.L. Prototypes both make one that gets good power.

Ground Fusion Wires: 70
This will help the car run better overall. Not real performance numbers from these, but overall a great mod.

Get a CAI, and a full cat back with a high flow cat upgrade.
Then if you want to risk your warrenty, get a header.
If thats not enough, start pulling out their cheap ___ sound deadening material, carpet, plastic liner, AC, radio, rear seats, and get some 15 lb rims. That should help a ton maing
