Question, Key getting hot

Newbie here. after I take a drive I notice when I take the key out its hot. Is this normal? Anyone experience this? its probably a stupid question

viper3 04-05-2005 06:18 PM

I have not noticed any heat, I can check on the ride home from work. That will give it a half hour to heat up.

Is it hot to the touch, or a little warm. (burn your hand, to hot to hold)?

It should not be getting burning hot to the touch. do you have any added on electronics, dealer or after market like the under dash lights. It could be bad wiring.

defytrends 04-05-2005 06:20 PM

everything stock, just a a tad too warm not burning hot

Is the metal part hot, or the whole key in general?

defytrends 04-05-2005 06:28 PM

just the metal part

TimmyT 04-05-2005 06:29 PM

hmm, haven't noticed that in my tC yet.

scoobyroo2002 04-05-2005 07:01 PM

Hmmm niether have I. Was it a hot day? that might have an effect on it.

Fujiz_xb 04-05-2005 07:02 PM

i havent noticed that or heard of that before..sounds wierd.

Captain_tC 04-05-2005 07:32 PM

Nope, my keys are room temperature. Does it get hot all the time, or just on long rides?

defytrends 04-05-2005 07:36 PM

usually after the rush hour drive from work (25-30min) . ive done long drives before where it felt kinda warm

WarrenSteve 04-05-2005 07:39 PM

mine has felt warm before... dont remember the exact circumstances though... figgered its normal.

just warm, not burning hott

Su1c1da1 04-05-2005 08:36 PM

hmm dunno... i only use the valet key since im using an aftermarket alarm and the regular key is so bulky and big.. but haven't notice any warmness to the key..

jaewon223 04-05-2005 08:41 PM

no warmness that i noticed

iheartmytC 04-05-2005 10:45 PM

After driving home (55mins) my key didnt feel warm.

defytrends 04-05-2005 11:07 PM

After 5 today (pst) ill let you guys know. it can be either since i park my car outside so the sun hits it it warms up some the parts, but it gets shaded once i get outta work, or my car is "warming" up to me who knows haha

TurboMe 04-05-2005 11:37 PM

it shouldn't be warm

Huey 04-06-2005 12:26 AM

I never really touch the metal part of my key to see if it warm or not. You might want to get that checked, something might be getting to hot and you could have a problem like the guy who posted his dash where it was melted.

xnevergiveinx 04-06-2005 01:09 AM

mine gets a littlw warm, i figure it's normal, my corolla used to get it decently hot

yeah thats my fear after reading his story. sometime this week itll get checked back to the dealer i go

after 5 today i spent 20 min on the road
i was touching the key/and the metal where the hole is and it was hot. so something was heating it up.
like one of my earlier theories since my car sat in the sun today it probably heated it up

but after a drive today 20 min after 7 and my car was in the shade. it was just warm

viper3 04-06-2005 02:22 PM

Ok, so I checked it last night and this morning, and the key is not cold, its the same temp as my metal scion key chain.
Had the key in my pocket for about 15 min and it feels warmer to the touch than it did pulling it out of the ignition.

So if yours is really that warm, I would take it to the dealer to have it checked out.
The Temp here in STL is about 65-75 when I did the test.
