how bad is the leak, our better off ,getting oil consumption performed, rear main gets replaced if it qualifies for recall.

Then it's a transmission oil seal, not a rear main seal. Rear main seal is between the engine and crankshaft, just behind the flywheel.

Well I took my car to the dealer and that's what they told me. So how would you go about replacing the transmission oil seal? Is that the liquid seal compound that goes in between the tranny and the engine?

That's why I was asking if you are sure that it's tranny oil. Since the rear main seal is between the engine and tranny, it will visually leak where the tranny bolts up. Tranny oil leaks are not very common from there, which is why you really want to confirm what fluid you are leaking.

In any case, a rear main seal replacement or an input shaft oil seal replacement (if it's the tranny that's leaking) is about the same job. The subframe has to come down and trans has to come completely out. Clutch and Flywheel or Torque converter and Flexplate has to come out for rear main seal as well. It's a good bit of work.

I would see the oil pool up on top of the tranny. Like I said that's what the dealer said so I'm going with that. I'll also clean the old seal off the tranny and th engine and redo that with a new tranny sealant.
