WTF? Shift to what? Automatic means that it shifts for you.

ProfoundMoron 04-18-2005 08:26 PM

I think that he means, shifting from the low gear setting to a higher gear setting. There's a low gear and a high gear normally. I'm not sure how it's set up on the scion. Unfortunately I'm not sure how much damage it will do. I don't think that it would be very much.

Huey 04-18-2005 08:26 PM

um u can shift an automatic

Huey 04-18-2005 08:26 PM

the gears are L 2 3 D, thats how u shift it

rolstc 04-18-2005 08:27 PM

really doesnt do any damage if you do it well .... you have to be carefuk though because are auto engines arent really made for down shifting and stuff. So if i were you i wouldnt even try it... Just shift gears when needed. Like uphills and downhills

tC_kevin 04-18-2005 08:27 PM

how exactly do you shift with an automatic? please do tell. i want to know

rolstc 04-18-2005 08:28 PM

L.2.3.D

maximus96 04-18-2005 08:29 PM

start in L, punch it till redline, then push the shifter to 2 and so on...

Exactly, this might be an automobile revelation. As for those low to high gears, you aren't supposed to be shifting those during driving. You are supposed to stop and switch them. The automatic transmission isn't built like a manual and is not supposed to be abused like that. Why would you want to switch them anyways? If you like to switch gears, get a manual.

Huey 04-18-2005 08:37 PM

i've noticed that if i "shift" my automatic since apparently everyone says thats impossible, my car is quicker.

ProfoundMoron 04-18-2005 08:42 PM

Most of the time it only feels quicker...but I'm not sure about with the scion transmission.

Eiso 04-18-2005 08:42 PM

Just dont start with L > 2 > 3 > D, as if a manual!

d-dave 04-18-2005 08:48 PM

Chaning the gear selector in an auto should be done at a stop or very slowly. Its useful for going up steep hills and making sure you don't go too fast down them. My dad always had to do that when we were going to see my grandmother in buchannon county, VA.

Like others have said, don't shift it like you want a clutchless manuel (a la auto stick) because it will tear up the transmission over time. If you did it one, or did it a couple times while being a dumb ___, I don't think you've tanked your tranny. If you do it everyday then you will blow it pretty quickly.

Don't be a dink, use your car like you're supposed to =)

Those lower gears are for inclines and downgrades to keep your engine from overexerting itself and preventing loss of torque. The lowest, L, is for really just towing as far as I'm concerned, but what could you tow in a tC?

gavmitchau 04-18-2005 09:17 PM

exactly! towing..

lriicelboy 04-18-2005 09:49 PM

i find myself shifting down from D to 3. It says in the manual, that that is for engine breaking.. so it throws the RPMs up but slows down the car without you having to press the brake pedal.

lol why didnt u just get a 5sp. . :loser:

WarrenSteve 04-18-2005 09:54 PM

wow, lets not rip on the kids with autos or anything.

I sometimes downshift in the winter to "engine break" brakes are almost useless in ice, so you use the engine to slow yourself down. I'm sure doing this is often or switxching to L going 45 will damage teh tranny.

But these are Camry trannys. I dont think they are that easy to screw up!

pureXtC 04-18-2005 10:00 PM

id be willing to bet that the atx will shift faster than u can ever shift it manually so why bother
