Default sunroof question???

why does it stop when you push to the open position when it comes straight up(45 degree position)?

why does it stop when you are closing it from being completely open like 1/4 of the way from shutting?

If you want to give us a little more info like what kind of sunroof you have, it might help.

If this is for the tC then it is because it has 3 positions. One as a moonrof, the other position opens slightly at 5 inches and then the other opens entirely. No I am just kidding I am not sure but it does do that.

Default Sunroof positions

While I agree it's a bit obnoxious to have to hold the button to get the sunroof to open completely and close, too, it's because it has 3 standard positions.

1. Back end up -- no deflector
2. Deflector up -- sunroof open 75%
3. Deflector up -- sunroof fully open

It would be nice to have an extra button to fully close or open it, but you'll get used to the built-in settings.

Man, a lotta bad blood on this thread already. Geez. So here's my take on the various sunroof positions:

closed:
self explanatory

angled open, no deflector:
to allow for moderate air circulation

open "75%", deflector up:
to allow for that sunroof wide-open feel while minimizing windnoise and the amount of air that enters the cabin. The deflector sendt he air up and over the opening, and it comes back down right at the edge of the opening.

open all the way, deflector up:
best for slower traffic, when wind noise isn't an issue. obviously more sunshine, more spacious feeling, and more... well... open. Only problem is that wind noise and buffeting get pretty high at highway speeds with this setting.

the non-talked about setting - the one where it's only open 3 inches before it closes:
I've decided this is so that when you're leaving your car parked in the sun for 20 minutes to run into the grocery store, it doesn't get too hot in there. The opening is large enough to allow hot air to escape easily, but small enough that someone can't drop their midget car-thief friend through the opening and steal your stereo.

Does the moonroof have an anti-pinch system like the side windows? BE CAREFUL IF YOU TEST THIS! If not then I'd bet that this is the reason you have to press the button twice to close.

I dont see the need for the 75% open setting personally. If you're going fast enough for noise to be an issue at the 100% open, the 75% isnt much different. I'd be nice to have the moonroof have an auto-open/close, like the side windows, but thats just getting greedy. ;) (yes I know there is a sort-of auto-open, but it only applies to the opening between the angled up position and 75%)

The sunroof does not have the same pinch-protection. I tested it out (on a friend).

hey so if you have to press the button 3 (3? or 2?) times to open the sunroof completely...would it open 100% automatically if you pressed the button 3 times real fast? anyone know or want to try for me? :D

Redfish just said, in plain english, that it's probably to act as a form of pinch protection. That makes sense to me. So does my anti-midget theory, though, so I dunno. As for it breaking... sunroofs are very simple, mechanically speaking. I've only read of one instance on this board where someone's broke already. But sunroofs are not exactly cutting-edge technology. Toyota has been making them a long time. So I would be quite surprised if it flat-out stopped functioning.

No. The moment you let go of the button to push it a second time, the thing stops moving. the second quick press would angle it slightly higher, and the third press would angle it slightly higher. With this method, you wouldn't even get it to "stage 1." The most efficient way of opening it, I'm afraid, is to hold for 1.5 seconds or so, hold for 0.5 seconds (to engage auto-open), then hold for another 0.5 seconds once it's stopped moving.

As for Redfish not seeing much difference between 75% and 100%... to each is own. I rarely open it to 100%. I don't sit far enough back to enjoy the extra 1.5 inches, I get plenty of sun that way, it's slightly quieter, and the buffeting is very noticeably less. This is especially an issue, I think, with taller people. opening it all the way would result in your head being buffeted and your hair being blown out the sunroof (hopefully your toupe is well attached).

I usually forget to open it to 100% anyway, out of pure laziness I think. Having to keep my hand up there while it opens and press it a 3rd time, I just say screw that, its open. ;)

The sunroof pinch protection does work...I tested this myself right after testing the driver and passenger window...the sunroof applies a considerable amount of force before it backs off - OUCH...the windows on the other hand are much more gentle...If I had to choose, and I hope I don't ever have to, I would rather get my head stuck in the windows than in the sunroof...ha ha ha
