Default Sunroof Rattle

When my sunroof is opened all the way it rattles over bumps. Very simple for a Master Diagnostic Tech to understand as he heard the sound when we went for a test ride. The dealership just called me and they said that it could not be fixed as it is a "normal characteristic" of the car. Is this BS or what. Does any one have this problem and maybe a soultion to it???

Well, I checked the link above, and there's really nothing on the sunroof rattle that we're having now.

I took my 06 in because the sunroof rattles in vent and open settings. The dealership narrowed it down to 2 seperate parts in the sunroof assembly, and ordered a whole new assembly.

Two days later I took the car back in, and the tech showed me the part, and said that Toyota told them not to install it, that the techs @ Toyota needed them to run tests (for 9+ hours) and see what they could come up with.

Needless to say, my roof still rattles, and Toyota is "Aware of the problem, but has no fix at this time"...

If you look at the assembly, it's a metal slider in a metal track, so when you go over bumps/etc it's bound to rattle I've seen a lot of people complain about this, but it's just the way it's designed. I think the only other way they could have made it to prevent this would be to use rubber/etc, and then you would end up having to replace it, so that's not very economical/logical.

well... i'm at ~9500 miles and it just started to rattle within the last 1000 miles or so... debating if it's even worth it to bring it in.

my tC's only a little over a month old with 2400 miles, and it makes me sad to think that some day it won't still be perfect anymore. my question though is (and forgive me, I've never owned a new car with an actual warranty before!) when you take your car to the dealership to have them check out something like that, considering it should still be covered under warranty, do you still end up paying their ungodly labor rate just for them to come back and tell you they can't do anything about it? I wanted to take mine in and see what they say about my slight grind in 2nd gear, but I don't want to pay them to tell me there's nothing wrong with it.

It's covered either way - it doesn't cost you anything to have them look for a problem.

21,000+ miles rattle free. Have you guys been driving a lot with it completely open?

The roof rattles on my 06 when open. It only does it, though, on bumpy roads. Normal driving does not affect it. It's a little annoying but it doesn't bother me enough to take it in.

well the 06's having fewer miles on average could have something to do with it, but I'm still crossing my fingers that maybe they fixed it.

I have an 05 TC and had the same rattleing problem. My friend is a tech at toyota and he looked it up and the issue is known by Scion so I'm not sure why they havent fixed it. I took my car in for rattling with the sunroof and squeeking in the headliner. They tightened two screws on the sunroom arms and the rattle was gone. For the headliner, they padded with form and noise is gone. If ur car is under warranty still, take it in. They should fix it. At least they fixed mine.

Yeah it rattles. I would guess that maybe 75% of all tC rattle somewhere. There is no permanent solution. Try lithium grease or silicone spray on all the tracks. Dont freak out immediately the first time you hear it and go crying to the dealership. Believe it or not, you will get used to it.
