Default ticking sound coming from my engine

I have a 2008 tc spec with the 4 cylinder vvt-I 16 valve motor. The other day when I was driving home on the hwy it started a small tick. About 5 mins later I got home parked it and figured I'd deal with it the next day. When I started it the next day the tick was gone so I went to the store and half way there it came back and much louder this time. I immediately turned around and went home and as soon as I was pulling in the drive way it died. If anyone has any ideas or has felt with this before please let me know what I should do. It's not under warranty. It still feels like it has plenty of power

open the hood and put your ear around the air filter box, with the tube that goes from the filter to the throttle body. You should see a device that has a green tag/**** on it. With the engine running, do you hear the ticking from there? That is the VSV valve, it helps with the emissions from the charcoal canister into the intake manifold. It can get very loud in ticking, it sucks out the vapors from the canister into the engine. See if the noise is coming from there.
