Default trade-in value

so my local dealer picked up a silver 04' STI at auction recently and I went to give it a test drive. the car is just an animal. after the drive we went inside to run some numbers. I didnt have my tC at the time just my winterbeater but I was curious as to what kind of trade it they would give me. first of all they didnt even know what a scion tC was, so they called the dealer where I bought it and have had all the work done(supercharger and such). they came back w/ a 13,500 trade in value. apparently the scion dealer told them that all the options decrease the value of the car. Now I paid a sticker price of 19500 and they are saying that my car is worth less then a stock tC at a sticker price of 16500 (same miles/condition). it surprised me. I know aftermarket parts devalue a car but factory/dealer options?? anyway... thinking of listing it on ebay and set the reserve somewhere in the 20-25k mark. is that to high? I know I'm never going to come close to the 10k I've put into it but I dont want to sell it for nothing. I guess my STI dreams are gonna have to wait.

Yeah I put my car in KBB.COM with zero options and had to choose 2005 ( I have an 06), it gave me a price of 18,500 value. You should deffinetly be able to pull over 20,000 for it.

ive had a similar experience. i test drove that gli at a local dealer. needless to say, wasnt to impressed for the 25+ they wanted for it, more like 27 with sunroof and sirious. any way, i didnt like the lag, the seats were ugly as fu** especially for a sports sedan, and they were to small for me, im 230. (btw, i knew more than the salesman did, he said he'd only be there a week. i think a week is plenty of time to learn about your product, but he was clueless about the car, didnt even know the price at first.) even though i wasnt interested, i still was curious to see what the trade would be, they also had to call the local toyota dealer, i have an 06 with spoiler, tint, and sub w/ 2600 miles. the guy came back with 15K. I laughed in his face, told him our cars were selling over their initial retail (we all know why) and his buddy chimes in, with the usual car dealer "i know all" attidude "WELL YOU GOTTA REALIZE, YOU KNOW, THEY GOT TONS OF THESE 06'S ON THE LOT, SO THEYRE NOT GOING TO BE AS WILLING TO GIVE A HIGH TRADE. YOU KNOW, ITS ALL ABOUT SUPPLY AND DEMAND..."
it still tickles me everytime i tell this story. i told my scion salesman while i was having an oil change, obviously we were rolling. after the salesman said that, i laughed out loud and so did my fiance, and i simply said they have no business selling cars, and left. needless to say, he never even followed up. puts car salesmen to shame. o yea, almost forgot this was at NORTHTOWNE HYUNDAI, VW, and MAZDA.

well you've got to remember, dealerships are looking to make a few thousand on the trade in. So let's say you are offered $15,000 for the trade in. They'll probably turn around and sell it for $17,000

right.. I understand that. but it was the fact that "dealer" options that came w/ the car new made it worth less then a bone stock one. Im still debating trying to list my car. After driving that STI I'm always a little dissapointed when i put it to the floor in my tc. If I could get 23-24 for my scion and sell my crx si I would make the trade in a heartbeat. I love my scion, dont get me wrong. but I mean comeon.. its a sti. do I have to say any more?

plus they only want 25k for it w/ 19000 miles.. sounds like a good deal to me.

Yeah, most dealerships make a majority of their money on used car sales...so they're going to try and hose you as much as possible...

Just do KBB.com and go around to other dealerships if they may be selling tC's and get a gist of pricing...then figure in what you paid for aftermarket stuff...

Note of caution...any performace Subaru or an Evo was probably owned by a younger person...and probably beat them hard...just stereotyping...but I'd make sure it's looked over very well by a local trusted mechanic.

the local dealerships are selling them for 19. the only reason toyota would quote such a low price is so that they can get it themselves and sell it certified.

Yeah bro it is very unusual to get high blu book from a dealer they want to make as much $$$$$ AS POSSIBLE. I actually got high blu for my 96 jetta when I bought my box. It was at tracy scion in ca I know that doesnt helpu but at least it lets u know to try other dealers.

I'm in a similar boat as you bro, I found a nice 04 Silver STI with 17,600miles and am thinking of trading in my tC for it. I only got like 11500 left to pay on my tC, so if I can at least get 15,000 for it I'll be happy. The dealership that's selling this sti has an 05 tC with 11,000 miles for $21,000. So if they try to give me a low trade in value, I'm not gonna buy it. My tC's an 06 with only 4400 miles. I'm gonna make sure to have my tC with me so they can see the car upfront and appraise it or whatever. And I'm taking off as much of my aftermarket stuff as possible.

Madigan, you have to realize, with as much as you have done to your vehicle, it really cuts down on the percentage of people that want that done to theirs. That is what brings the value down to a dealer.

It'd probably be wiser to, if feasible, return your car to as close to stock as possible. Your trade in value would most likely go up and you can turn around and sell those parts online and actually get some money back for them.

There is a difference between dealer-installed and factory parts. The TRD supercharger, as well as any other TRD part for the tC, is not warranteed by Scion, it is warranteed by TRD (This information comes from the Scion website). Therefore it is considered an aftermarket part, which lowers your trade-in value. Consider selling the car yourself.

The TRD SuperCharger installed the DIY way carries a 12 month 15,000 mile warrantee, installed by a Toyota/Scion dealer it carries the remander of the PowerTrain Warrantee of 5 years 60,000 miles. So somehow i dont think that is going to Hurt it much. Also, considering Toyota owns TRD, in the loop of things that means Toyota Carries the warrantee.
