Ive heard that you shouldnt. I havent done it before on any of my vehicles. I also heard that when you use Royal Purple you shouldnt use something cheaper cause of how its made or whatever. Ive noticed smoother operation with RP and noticed when I put Pennzoil Platinum in that it was no longer as smooth but yeah it wasnt that big of a deal to me and Id rather save a few more dollars. So I currently use Pennzoil.

your confusing yourself. is there a reason on why you want to use something else besides the price of RP. ive switched from Mobil1 filter and oil to RP oil and toyota filter about 4 oil changes ago and never looked back. runs soooo much smoother than since ive had the car (bought it june 2005). I say stick with it, its runs good for me, hopefully the same for you?

There is no harm in switching from one to the other.

HOW DARE YOU!!! Royal purple is awesome, I used it on my GSX, Scion, FJ cruiser and F150(not at the same time) and it has never steered me wrong. Now, the filter is the part that matters, you gotta get a high quality one...like not toyota.

uhhh the Toyota and TRD filters are some of the best choices for a filter. Only one that seems to be better is the K&N oil filter, and that one is way more expensive.

RP & OEM Toyota filters= Good Deadly Combo!

I've been doing this "combo" for the last four oil changes. Car runs smoother. Starts better even in ice cold temps. Gas mileage is great. Acceration is huge difference even in AT!

I tried using K&N filters. Hated them. Every O.C. the car didn't want to start up three times during the whole mileage period. Gas mileage was also down few miles per the tank. Might of been a different story since I was using M1 @ the time. Still I wasn't impressed with them so I went back to OEMs.

RP & OEM never had that diffcult starting problems....

Unless the engine is physically seizing up (and that would be way more than your oil filter ) your starting issues had absolutely nothing to do with your oil filter choice. It also had nothing to do with gas mileage.

And for the record, in one car I own I switched from dino oil to M1 years ago and then to RP about a year ago. In the tC I used M1 and then switched to RP about a year ago.. same for our 4Runner. I keep pretty good fuel efficiency doco on my cars (especially the tC) .. and there has never been any measureable difference in fuel economy at all on any of them. Measuring one (or even a few) tanks is useless information really. My tC, under the exact same daily drive will fluctuate from 23 mpg to 28 mpg tank to tank for example. My data includes months and years of driving.

And there is absolutely nothing wrong with RP. I am guessing the guy with pretty much 1 post who said that is an Amsoil salesman. I have heard some of the most ridiculous stuff about RP from those guys Amsoil, RP, M1 etc are all good oils. Actually, most of the higher end dino oils are great as well if you keep the changed regularly.

I've been strongly warned that once you engine has synthetic oil you should not go back to regular. The synthetic is actually better than the regular.

Companies that make synthetic oil because its been rumored that the synthetic oil expands the seals in the engine; then, when conventional motor oil is used, the engine springs multiple leaks.

Which makes little sense seeing as how the molecules (at least in the ones I know of) in synth are smaller than dino oil ;)

You can switch back and forth without damage.
