Passing in 5th in a Civic? Be prepared to stomp it and wait for a while for the torque to rev it up enough. Better to downshift to 4th, even better to 3rd unless you're already doing 80.

from looking at your list your impressed with the civic and acting a bit biased toward it, looks like you already have your car picked out

the tC is faster and has more standard features. the Civic gets better mileage and is more reliable. Don't ask me which one looks better, all compact coupes look the same to me.

How is the Civic more reliable? I am not saying it isn't but how do you know? The tC has not even been out for a year, we can't say which is better. Plus, ever heard of an unreliable Toyota? Fuel mileage-wise though, Civic wins hands down. tC with a 5spd gets 22mpg in the city, while the Civic gets 30+, quite a difference.

I think the Civic is better in two ways: certainty, and refinement. The Civic has been out forever, and has been refined over and over again. It is a rock solid car that you know will keep going, and going, and going... With the Civic you also know for a fact it will have high resale, so you know exactly what you are getting.

The tC is a Toyota, so I doubt reliability will ever be a problem, especially considering the tranny and the engine are from the Camry. The only thing is that the tC is a new car, and the little quirks have not been worked out yet unline on the Civic.

As a driver of a 99 Honda Civic Si for the past 6 years, if it were me looking for a new car it would definately be the tC. I love Honda cars. They make quality automobiles that will last you for a long time with little to no problems. I've got 83k on my car and it runs amazingly still. Great gas mileage and I actually think the 2005 Civic's look MUCH more elegant than the 01-04 Civics. That being said, the only civic I would ever own would be a 99-00 Electron Blue Pearl Si (or maybe the 2006 Si). Everyone and their mother drives a civic. I bought my Si for originality, the tC, IMO, offers just that. I am starting to see more tC's around here but it's still a 15 to 1 '05Civic/tC ratio.

Another reason for the tC is in the engine. The tC has one thing the civic so desperatly needs, and that is torque. The Si has the most torque in the civic lineup and believe me, it just doesn't feel like enough (grantd it is designed for top end power). I had a 97 EX before my car now and it came with a nifty little **** that I called my turbo button. Whenever I would turn the turbo **** (A/C) to off I could actually pass someone, if I didn't my car was slooooooww...

Anyway, overall they're both nice cars and you can't go wrong with either of them. It all comes down to personal preference. Toyota makes great cars and so does Honda. Remember it's YOU who's going to be behind the wheel each day not anyone on this board or any other board.

Thanks for everyones input again.
I really want to buy a tC, I just wish I could have tested the 5 speed and whiped it around by myself. I got to test the civic by myself and I'm sorry to say but I beat the crap out of it and it handled it well.
I would have liked to make more sharp turns and gone over some bumps and stuff with the tC.
I think on Monday I will ask for another test. too bad they only have 2 autos at the dealer.

if you woulda said an RSX then it would be a pretty even match. but the civic doesnt compare to the tC in any department.

Honestly, go with what your comfortable with. The reason I bought my tC was because of the price and features while comparing it to other cars that I thought were in its class, ie Civic, Focus (normal and ST), Jetta (all incarnations) , Chevy Aveo (I threw it in for sh*ts and grins) and finally Acura RSX base model. I'm happy to say I was impressed. I want to warn you the gearing for the tC in a manual is really short especially in 1st and 2nd and I hate the electronic speed limiter. If you buy a tC, judging from your name, you will find that out. With that in mind, have fun.

The engine and tranny in the tC will definitely be a reliable platform... the only thing unknown will be other systems, but I doubt that will be an issue. I know someone here ran a civic 83k, but let me emphasize the point that that is not a very long life..... I expect ANY car to run that long without major issues. When I think of longterm reliability, I am thinking 100k or more at least. That is a truer test of how well the vehicle was designed, and whether it was designed to outlive the warranty, or to live as long as possible. Now, that being said, I dont doubt that the honda would last that long, nor the tC. Its hard to say much about which would be more reliable, only that they both most likely will. The honda MAY have more resale, but if you buy a car thinking of resale... then you are pretty much wasting your time. A car is a horrible investment in the long run, so I dont think much about resale when I am looking. And anyway, how do we know the tC wont have a higher resale than expected? That is hard to tell from this point. Anyway, just thought I would throw in a little more opininon

why would you ask that here in a scion tc board? you have to as this somewhere else man. of course over 95% of the peeps in here are going to vote for the tc. just as if you would go to a honda civic board and ask there. over 95% would choose the civic. but if i were you i would get the tc.

99% of all cars in the us have speed limiters..... if we went much above the limit we would redline anyway

Haha, turbo button being the a/c ****. That's great. As for a Honda forum recommending the Civic over a tC, that's debatable. If you browse Honda Tech you'll see a TON of non Honda owners, those that grew up with Civics, Rexs, Integras then got jobs and bought something higher. They are also pretty fair when comparing their own weaknesses.

get the civic; just remember to change the timing belt after 90k or you'll destroy your engine when it snaps . The camry engine does not have the same problem. Actually, drive both, then decide. I have.

True, and on this car, you would be wound tight.. so you wouldnt want to do it long!! Like I said, virtually any car you buy in the US has one... not sure why people just started noticing them, they have been that way for years!!
