Default Wheel Locks

I just ordered my brand spanking-new FM tc and was told that it doesn't come with wheel locks. Living in downtown Atlanta.... does anyone have any recommendations for a specific brand of wheel lock? I'm not sure what to get... pepboys or the toyota/scion ones.

wheel locks are supposed to prevent thiefs from stealing your wheels.

they are a waste of an investment i think because if the theif really wants your wheels, he will get them. wheel locks pretty much dont do anything at all.

look at this guy

I ordered my tC with wheel locks. I think they at least add some difficutly for thieves to steal the wheels right? It's like alarms; it doesn't stop the cars being stolen/broken in but at least they make car thieves think twice.

The point in anything is if a theif wants something bad enough, they will probably get it. No club, or alarm, or locks are going to save you. The goal though is to make it such a PITA that they move to the next car. I think it was on this board that a guy showed his car up on cinderblocks with the wheels stolen (no locks). Anyone with a lug wrench that can get the car on blocks can take the wheels as they are now. Having wheel locks would require much more investment and intent from a thief. Is it worth the $30 to you?

On a different note, check out the North Georgia Scion Owners group in the clubs section since you're in ATL also.

while wheel-locks are definitely a good idea, probably the best thing about the tC is that the stock rims are quite nice and you can get take-offs (stock 17" rim and tire) for ~$400. If something does happen, they won't be as hard to replace as the $2000 set of performance rims/tires.

Get the Scion wheel locks - why not? Plus, if you order them from www.mcgeorgeparts.com or something, they're like $30 instead of like $60 from the dealer. You can install them with the stock lug wrench in about 5 minutes with zero know how. All you do is remove one of the stock lug nuts from each wheel and then use the special attachment that comes with each set to install the new ones. I have no doubt a determined thief could remove them if he wanted to, but I also have no doubt that nobody would go to that much trouble when so many cars don't have wheel locks.

Any wheel lock can be removed by any good thief. Someone who steals rims for money consistantly will not even be slowed down by the locks.

That being said- I still have them. A wheel lock will prevent someone who does not know what they are doing from stealing your rims such as a kid who just wants the rims for his/her car.

locks are meant to keep honest people out. wheel locks just make it more difficult for a mechanic to take your wheels off when you need new tires. =/ spend your money on some car wax.

I think they're a worthwhile investment, especially since the tC is a fairly hot car right now. There's no reason for use to get Civic'd because you're worried about your mechanic's ability to unlock something with a key.

If a mechanic slams the hood of your car shut, or if he can't figure out how to get a wheel lock off, you need to find a new mechanic.

I agree with the above: no alarm, locking system, or 'Club' is ever going to be theft-proof... But at least they slow down or deter someone from snagging your car easily.

By the same logic, when you park your car, do you leave the sunroof open, or do you close it?

I mean, if someone wanted to get in the car bad enough, they'd just smash a window, so why not just leave your sunroof open for them to jump in?

I think I will get the locks from McGeorge or some from pepboys, I'm not sure at the moment. I'm more worried about the average kid who wants some different rims for his car as I'm pretty sure you can't get that much money for these wheels and tires compared to stealing a set of someone's 20in+ rims, which there are plenty of in Atlanta.

if u want u car on blocks go for that.... otherwise get the scion wheel locks, the dealers have their own set of the wheel lock keys so its not that bigga deal when u get ur car serviced... i just had my wheels rotated with my oil change and they didn't even charge me but its probably cuz i placed my lowering springs order

i think Wheel Locks are very good investment if you have nice set of rims. Although i keep my car in the garage most of the times... u never know when you are parked elsewhere.

I have 2 different set of keys for my rims..and it's all worth it. Hopefully i don't lose the keys..hehe. Mine are inverted lugs...so it's pretty hard to turn the lugs unless u have the keys...especially when there are 2 different sets. I even have trouble taking my own wheels off at times..haha.

All i can say... wheels locks are well worth it. Why give a theif easy access?

I think I'm just going to order the stock ones from mcgeorge since I'm just trying to prevent kids not professionals from taking my wheels, another reason that i'm getting the stocks is that it won't be a hassle everytime I take it to the dealer to get my tires rotated, brakes done, lowering kit installed etc.
