I don't think it hurts to change the fluid every 15k miles. Fluid is cheap enough and its good insurance. I do mine every third oil change. Its smart if you drive with a heavy foot. The more heat generated, the faster the fluid will break down and lose is lubricating qualities. I've built a lot of performance transmissions and heat is the #1 reason why a trans fails. You may notice a slight performance increase with fresh fluid. The trans will probably shift smoother. Shame they don't make shift kits for these cars......

I agree.
Mine turns out to be about every 16k miles.
As you say, heat kills, and it's cheap insurance.

Is it okay to mix the tranny fluid? Like add Royal Purple or Amsoil to the OEM stuff.
I am gonna do this soon and wanted to know if I had to go and buy the quarts at the dealer.

How much is it on average at the dealer anyways? So many questions lol!

Most people do - compatible fluids are fine to mix.
Usually, I change the fluid - not a full drain/flush/fill.
Just use the right juice and you're fine.

I'm a tech at a dealership and I always use the tranny flush machine. To hook it up you just disconnect the two tranny hoses/lines and connect them to the machine. The machine has a flow indicator that tells you if you connected it correctly. very simple to use.

ok, techie... so what you're saying is that dealerships DON'T unscrew the hex bolt, and use the tranny hose/lines instead?

what if you just wanna drain it? there's gotta be something to use to unscrew that tranny bolt..

1st of all u guys should just stick with Toyota ATF Type T-IV fluid seriously. You cant go wrong with it.

2nd just buy a whole set of Hexs at your local auto parts place, is only like 7-8 bucks. >= /

My friend is GM tech. He recommends every 30,000 miles.

When he saw the whole "No need to change fluid unless extreme driving conditions;" he almost died from laughing to hard.

I let his brother (He's just as inclined as him) do my change. That Type IV fluid is very beautiful ruby red when leaving the bottle and he showed me how black the fluid was from the engine. I think I changed it at 35-40k.

I'll probably change it again this Spring and put in new filter too.

Default Ran out of ATF fluid at 75,000 miles

This forum is cracking me up! I have the answers to a lot of your questions about endurance of your Scion.

Let me first say, I do not endorse Scion as a car company. They are a bunch of corporate bozo's who I would not want to deal with ever again.
I bought a 1500 miles on it lemon, xA, and Scion did everything they could not to fix the problem.

With that said, here are your numbers. If you drive hard,

Your ATF fluid will dry up around 75,000. My friend who works in the tranny business has stated, 60,000 detergents start breaking down in your transmission.
I drive HARD, I mean, leave it running at rest areas when I am too tired to run it any more, drive heavy traffic (Miami), and heaving highway back and forth from Orlando.

At 75,000, I was having shifting problems at which time I decided it is time to check my trans fluid. It was bone dry, so I refilled it to the normal level.
At 104,000 this fluid dried up and more was added. I only added about a half of quart to get it back to the normal reading range.

At this point, I'm opting to drop the pan and clean 'er out totally. So to answer your questions, don't run past 60k, good recommendation.
And to answer your other questions, no, I haven't done anything to the trans, just added fluid and at 105k currently, still running.

Also, my friend who is a mechanic recommended for my specific situation, an intercooler, since I am like DJ Khaled, and Go HARD with it, I need to send in the cooler air to the line to keep the ATF cooler.


I would love to tell you boys to keep up with Yota, but F Yota, cuz they are a bunch of non problem solving c-c-s-c-ing mother f----ers to me anyways.

Oh, and I did find out my problem they never fixed. The 134a low pressure plug had a leak where that piece that screws in to the refrigerant
was ****-eyed and a slow leak for months until I ran out of coolant and had to fill it and noticed the green leak detector stuff right at that plug.

Well, I must say scion-nara to you guys. If you want performance, there's no rub like a dub. And watch out for those 96-01 4 cyls, they are sludge city.
