I have 7.5mm left on my front pads that I just installed 2 years ago. The rotors/discs have reached maximum run out even though I moved it around the hub (moving it from lug hole, then measuring with run out gauge). Still is at max runout for the front.

I need to replace the front rotors/discs with new ones so the vibration isn't there..but I keep hearing how you can't put old pads onto new rotors. What is the thinking behind this? My performance pads weren't cheap so don't want to just be tossing them out just because "new" sounds better.


i did search but didn't find anything on this topic..

so... any thoughts?

You can use old pads on new rotors as long as the pads have an even wear. Just buff the pad to give it a clean surface to matte to the new rotor. If the Pad is worn unevenly though then you should definently consider replacing it otherwise youll warp the new rotor

Also why not just turn the rotors instead of buying new rotors? it would be alot cheaper that way.

You can put old pads on new rotors, however you shouldn't do so. Plus pads are cheap.

As said by a-medoza & Spicy you can but...
while stock pads are more forgiving of rotors, the stiffer material of the performance pads are more likely to damage a rotor; so, it's safer to say, 'use new pads'.

*edit* to ppl that don't like the work, new pads also mean greatertime before needing to tear it all apart again [like this is somehow difficult or something]
