Rack and Pinion leaking from lines..
Has anyone had issues with fluid leaking from their headlines in the Rack and Pinion? My boots are not leaking but I noticed fluid is leaking where the hard lines meet valve body on the Rack and Pinion.
I don't want to replace the whole thing because it's pretty much half the cost of what our cars are worth right now. I'll post some pictures up later today. I had a previous leak from torn CV boots and road grime down there but I really won't be able to work on the car until next weekend when I plan on raising it as well. _________ |
Some reason I can't upload and add photos to my albums on SL but here is a photo of our rack and pinion. Pretty much there is fluid leaking around the left side where what appears to be red seals? That's where the lines connect to and it seems to be leaking in that general area.

Here's where they are leaking. At the lines right above the inner tie rod that connect to the rqck and pinion. I also relized that whatever shop put did my power steering fluid probably put the wrong fluid in there because Dexron III (ATF) which is used in our our vehicles and tons of other Toyotas is red and not yellow like other power steering fluid. Has anyone came across this issue before? I sure as hell know someone has as this car has been around for over a decade and isn't the only Toyota that uses Dexron III as power steering fluid. |
Honda PSF is yellow. Is that the cause of the leak? Hard to say. The Scion manual says Dex II and III temp range is 167 to 176 degrees f. The tC power steering return line has no cooler and Dex fluid scorches. I don't know the temp range of Honda PSF but the tC environment probably isn't very kind. I have to change Dex III every 25k miles or I can't read the fluid level on the reservoir. I recently used Dex VI. It's synthetic and supposed to resist scorching.
From the pic I can't tell where it's leaking. Might want to check the line fittings. The tC manual specifies 18 ft lbs. |
