17 or 18 inch wheels?

Hey guys im sure this has been asked a million times but I have searched and havent quite found the answer I was looking for.

Im looking to buy new wheels but im not sure if the extra cash for tires and bigger rims is worth getting 18's.

Is it that big of a difference between looks, ride quality, etc?

I will be running a wider wheel 8.5 or 9 and im lowered on megan racing springs(although the are stiffer and were compressed making it more like an s tech drop)

Should I buy 17's or spend the extra on 18's?

Thanks:icon_smile:

17's thy way u can go lower..looks better in my opinion but depends on wheel as well..what are u getting?

emrules2001 01-01-2011 01:48 AM

why are you going wide? If you are going for track use, then 17's all day. but if you want looks, go for the 18's

im selling my rims if u choose to get 18's. just to let you know. :D

Go with the seventeens. I can't find the article offhand, but according to Evo, the smaller the wheel, the better the performance (handling). Wide tires are still beneficial for traction, and eighteens might provide greater width.

I had the same debate but i ended up wanting to go with a 17x8 only because i am lowered on coilovers(rokkor maxxed running 1 collar) just now all i need to do is go buy the rims.

18 look nice but with drop they can rub real bad but 18 just look better fitted on the scion.
I just stay 17 cheaper tires cheaper rims.

Wow thanks for all the replys...

Once upon a time I wanted to track my car... then I moved to WA.

This will be purely for looks. I couldnt tell you the exact drop im currently on. Its close to S techs. I wanted to go with the most aggressive stance I could without having to do too much modding as far as fender pulling and a significant negative camber.

I am looking at either Rota's, Drags, or Tenzo's.(I know they are cheaper wheels, unfortunately I cant justify buying kai's in this weather for daily driving)

I will be buying Tein Coilovers very shortly after as my next mod.

I think the stock 17's look great however I have seen alot of tC owners go with aftermarket 17's and they look too small for the car....

Drag dr 31
Rota Torque
Tenzo Type M
5Zigen Zr+
Axis Shine

are some I was thinking of.

Im not a big fan of chrome lips or chrome anything... although the shines I might be okay with.

Thanks for the input.

Mr. Mike... its Simon haha.

MooSE55 01-01-2011 11:28 PM

Oh haha..I think if u got an aggressive offset it would look good on ur car..also u could save some cash and grt some raceland coils been riding on mine for bout a year no issues..ESP if ur only going for stance and daily driving it..there only like 300$..and warranty is awesome..

RUFiO_tC 01-02-2011 07:15 PM

I was looking into those but everyone advised against it. However, I know you've been running them which still makes me want to get them since you havent had problems. I've heard that as long as you arent trying to race with em they're fine but I've also heard its hit or miss whether you get a good set or a bad set.

The Tein Basics are only $800 ish which is why I was considering it....

You're right though. That's $500 bucks that I could use on other parts...

Test fit your wheels already so I can see if I want 17's or 18's :ponder:

im not sure why you can go "lower" on 17's you should be sizing the tire according to the oem tire diameter. the only way to go lower on 17's than 18's is using a smaller tire than stock. If saving money is also an issue don't go with different sizes front rear, you wont be able to rotate the tire and will have to replace them sooner. I have had anything from 16's to 19's on my tc. The 16's were just a cheap set with winter tires that i got looked a little small. I really liked the look of the 19's for pure street looks I loved them I could not go quite as low on them but that was due to them being 19x10 with 265/30 on all 4 corners. My other favorite was a set of team dynamics 17x7 with 225/45 subaru sti spec tires that i got from a friend. with the sticky tires and smaller wheels performance was much better. I will see if I can source some pics..
