Default Rim and Tire Widths

Quick question. If I were to buy a rim that was 18x8, how is it that I do not need a tire section width that matches 8 inches? People tend to run 225/245's, etc on an 8" wide rim. Wouldn't that mean that the width of the tire is wider than the width of the rim? how does that work? Sorry I'm a noob...lol. Or if I went with a rim that was 8" wide still but went with a 205 tire..wouldn't that make the tire too narrow for the rim? How does that work?
