Straight Pipe question..
 

Are these resonators or are they needed for emissions??? I'm in CA.
Doing straight pipe tomorrow. Would it be smart to start from were the yellow arrow indicated??? Thanks for help

From left to right: The smaller one is a catalytic converter. The other is a resonator. The primary catalytic converter is on the header, unless you're running an aftermarket unit. Deleting the secondary (pictured) won't throw a CEL.

I gutted the cat and its nice and hollow. I left the resonator to keep the down down. The second cat is just useless (otherwise used for emissions).
If your in Cali then would that not fail every emissions test possible?

well since the CEL wont pop up with the second cat removed then i am gonna remove both it and the res. i dont think you have to start smoggin a car until its 5 years old. i could be wrong though. either way im saving the parts just in case. right now i have the muffler removed were the cat back pictured starts, after the last bend. for some reason after i did this i here an annouying rattle inside the car. dosnt sound like a drone. almost sounds like the exaust is loose but ive been under there and everyhting seems normal.

So I did this today. Obnoxiously raspy. Will make video later. Ahhh now I have to pay to put the res back on. Smh

:rolling: put a high flow resonator, it will remove the rasp, but also lower the db, but not a lot. I removed the secondary cat and resonator also and replaced it with an aftermarket small resonator (about 10 inches) and my car sounds great. i still have the original muffler and i must say, best mod so far!

see, but i dont have the stock muffler. straight pipe all the way. and i had the shop bend towards the drivers side instead of the passengers at the axel, so putting the stock muffler back in would require me to cut that off aswell.

you guys think puttin the res back in and leaving the 2nd cat out would help with the rasp? i dont really mind a bit of rasp but damn. under load, at like 2800-redline ____ sounds like a trumpet. i swear you can hear from block away.

i have the stock exhaust still on.., but that doesn't matter wether i do or not. just add the small res, it's the best choice to reduce your rasp..

We have 4 cylinder cars; Of course removing cats and resonators will make it raspy! In a completely helpful tone: do you research before cutting things out of your car!

quick question to the OP, have you ever wondered why companies that make cat-back exhaust for our car always include one and even two resonators? sure, db level is a factor bc a crazy loud exhaust isn't what the consumer wants, but it is also to cut down the rasp! a resonator-less exhaust system equals rasp.. have you ever heard a v-8 with an exhaust system with no resonator/s? trust me, they sound just as bad.. different, bad just as bad.. i have my stock exhaust and with out that little res i put in, it would sound raspy also! in fact, i can hear just a bit of rasp in the exhaust tone still, but you know what, it sounds effin' awesome!

Does anyone know the diameter of the trd exhaust piping vs the stock piping ?

okay...your car sounds horrible, and that exhaust looks as bad as it sounds. Resonators and muffler's surpress engine noise and they also tune and cancel out undesirable exhaust noises. just running a straight pipe will sound awful with the exception of some nice turbo charged cars, but even those benefit from having some resonators and mufflers installed.

If you don't have a turbo on your tC, all you've done is make your car sound horrible with that exhaust.

You can put the stock res on or u can slap a 4" magnalfow res/mufl in there, it will help a lot. Oem is best btw but quieter

Did u gut the 2nd cat or swap it for a pipe?

Also, who ever recommends to or guts out cats shouldnt be allowed to reprodruce, this doesnt improve airflow, noise or power its actually the opposite

ok so iv drivin it for a couple weeks like this and its not that bad. turning on cold is when it sounds the worst but just for the first like 20 seconds. i would suggest leaving the res in and just deleting the muffler though. or the other way around. ill get some drive by vids later.

i did a muffler delete, with a turbo kit sounds orgasmicly amazing, better than my greddy believe it or not, but stock... hell no. get yourself an exhaust. im stock ATM but my tc sounds like ____ with only a muffler delete.

Laughing hard at comments. I like the stock exhaust, what was your goal?

dont see anything funny. just experimented i bit and found out what i liked. initial goal was purely to get for sound. currently just have mufler deleted like how it sounds. not to loud but a bit more feedback than stock.
