Hole in turbine housing: gathering opinions
Found a hole in my turbo housing. I'm curious, what do you guys think the impact from that hole will be? I'm talking performance and longer-term reliability as well.

I don't know if it rises to the level of asking for a replacement, or not. Obviously, the dealer and manufacturer have an incentive to say it's no deal at all. Not one just to take their word for it, I'll listen to any advice you folks might have as well.
Thank you!

this isn't quite from a performance perspective, but i will say (and the same goes for any $X,000 purchase) if you aren't 100% in your head about it, than you need to ask for replacement. Whether it hurts performance or not, you paid say 4,000 bucks, and having a hole in the part is not good enough. Besides, if you have any doubt, its going to mean you don't have complete trust in your equipment--that kind of thing is going to linger and hurt you whether the hole does or doesn't cause failure.

I'm inclined to agree with you, speterson82. Also, I do see what keeev is referring to. I'm not sure if that's a second hole or not. In either case, I have less confidence in this part holding up through the long-term, and am inclined to swap it with one that wasn't treated so bruskly when screw holes were drilled into it.

It's a custom kit I designed with PTuning. The housing is from ATP Turbo: T31 GT28 turbine housing. If there's any culpable party here, it's not PTuning, but ATP Turbo. Still looking into things.

I'VE SEEN THIS!!! Never thought I'd see it again. When I had this occur it was on a PTE variant of a their 76mm I believe, with a huge a/r hotside going on an ls1. Pulled it out of the box and couldn't believe it. Was actually in the same spot, almost identical. Didn't hesitate to call pte and get a replacement. They weren't happy but then again, there was a hole in the turbo so uh...ya know...sorry, but uh...give me a new housing. Sent the swiss cheese housing back and they gave us a new unit. Pte was going through some odd stuff at the time but they took care of it.

It's a non-issue. I've spoken with several local mechanics, and the engineers at ATP Turbo: they say it'll impact things 0% and won't corrode, etc. It's more of an indentation than a hole, because there is no outlet. Its creation is common in this application because ATP Turbo wants to use as strong a hole/screw combination as possible, this necessitates that larger diameter holes be drilled with this as a more common than not side-effect. Not something I'm concerned about.

^ I could see that. I think its similar to the rough cast marks on the side of certain tc engines. When I first cleaned my bay, i noticed these rough ridges on the side of the engine that looked like the engine was cracking. Turns out its just a byproduct of the cast. So it looked sketchy, but has no effect other than cosmetic.
