Cabin Air Filter Install

First off, for those reading the title and going "WTF", I don't blame you! But, in reality, there is a point to this thread...

While I cannot confirm whether or not the US models have a cabin air filter or not (I would assume not), I can confirm the Canadian grade tC models do not come equipped with this simple part. For the boys and girls down south, best to follow the steps below to determine if you have a filter or not.

But, there is good news! There is a filter that fits and there is a spot to put it! So, for fun, I put together a how-to!

Here's the filter you will need:

Step 1: Open and remove the glove box.

You will need to push in the tabs on the side of the glove box to squeeze it by, but once free hanging, simply pull up and it will come out of the track.

Step 2: Remove the rear plastic cover.

Step 3: Open the door to the heater unit.

Step 4: Notice there is a big empty hole where a filter belongs and insert your new filter. Take note of the orientation (UP).

Step 5: Close the door and reinstall the plastic cover and glove box in the reverse order of removal.

That's it (like you thought it would be harder...lol).

Enjoy your cleaner air and lower dust interior! For those with allergies, such as myself, you will appreciate this little thing more than normal.

is there a additional filter holder part needed for the filter?
the TC1 has a holder to put the filter in before you slip it into the heater unit

Nope, just the filter. It seems kind of cheesy as you install it, but thats the way it goes in.

The xB is the same part and installation.

I had noticed that mine didn't come with one when I was messing with my car stereo installation. Does installing the filter reduce the ammount of bleed through the ac system does? My car seems to flow alot of air even with the system off. The only way to stop it is to push the recurculation button. It's not a big deal but if the filter slows that down it might be nice.

I don't know...too cold here still to try the A/C! Haha. You'll have to try it out and let me know. So far I've noticed a little less dust in the car, but considering I barely drive it, its hard for me to comment.

Jericho941 04-19-2011 02:24 AM

I mean that outside air always comes into the car through the HVAC system wheather I have the fan on or off. The only time no air comes through the system is if I have the fan off, AND have depressed the recirc button. If it is cold out and I have the thermostat on the cold side, cold air comes in, if the fan is off. If I have the thermostat on hot, hot air comes through the vents, if the fan is off. I was hoping that the extra restriction of the filter might curb this issue some.

This is very disappointing. I'll have to pick one up for my car the next time I visit the dealer as these filters trap a lot of dirt that you'd otherwise be breathing. My previous car had one and it got filthy very quickly.

MightyP 04-19-2011 03:58 AM

You barely drive your car??? So wrong...

And the offer still stands. You're welcome to come down to sunny Florida and play on our roads. High about 75, low about 65 and we have a day scheduled at the drag strip scheduled for the 29th. :)

And I'll be picking my filter up tomorrow when I order the pigtail to redo my reverse light.

I'll be putting an order from one. maybe it'll relieve my allergies a bit when i'm driving around. pollen is my worst enemy

just got off the phone with the dealership. they told me that the right air filter is 87139-yzz08 which I assumed was the electrostatic version of the same size filter, but when I asked about a charcoal/carbon filter, they gave me 87139-50060 which is a $60 lexus filter... i somehow suspect that the dealership is wrong and I'll probably just place an online order for the 87139-yzz10 since i've found a link: http://www.toyotapartsandservice.com...ationChart.pdf saying that 87139-yzz10 is the premium version of 87139-yzz08

edit: ordered this one on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...em=#vi-content

Well, that explains one thing...the dealer can't read their own parts system. LOL

It’s called parts supersession. In otherwords:

87139-50060 became 87139-YZZ08 which then became 87139-YZZ10. Each one will fit, but they are all supposed to supersede to the new 87139-YZZ10.

So you've ordered the right one and the dealer is just confused. That's all.

VVTinme 04-19-2011 04:31 PM

What about 87139-YZZ11? That's what Sparks Toyota lists on their website.

being a parts guru let me clarify:

87139-50060 goes to a 87139-yzz08 which is standard cabin filter..
87169-yzz10 is PREMIUM filter that fits all yzz08 applications.

87169-yzz11 is premium filter for ALL 88568-52010-83 applications....

donsun 04-19-2011 08:10 PM

all in all, just buy the filter 1stOne posted in the OP :)

MightyP 04-19-2011 08:25 PM

And buy it from the link donsun posted. Dealer quoted me $45 for the YZZ10 and $25 for the YZZ08.

Thank you sir! I'm not a parts guy, just know how to dig for them haha.

MightyP 04-20-2011 01:03 AM

^ yeah, well, not all of us have tC parts just sitting in the storage room with the pens and paper. :)

1stOne 04-20-2011 02:11 AM

Haha!

Its less a storage room and more a giant warehouse.

MightyP 04-20-2011 02:39 AM

^ Not helping my jealousy!

You think the next time you go in for a new pad of sticky notes you could grab me some... I don't know...

- wheels
- strut tower brace
- BBK
- sway bars
- exhaust

Just when you get the chance. :)

w11tc 04-20-2011 03:33 AM

Nice! None of the tCs in the US (1st+2nd gen) ever came with cabin air filter from factory. Many of my friends own 1st gen tCs and they all complain about it. One of my friends got one installed for free for his 15,000 service. Just ordered the 87139-YZZ10 off ebay from a dealership in FL for $35 including shipping. I rather go with the OEM instead of an after-market one. Two Thumbs up for the post!!!
