did that photo say 38.6mpg? I believe that's pretty much max on this car. I was able to get no better than 38.5mpg in my experiments when i first got the car haha.

amazing photo. you have the best scenery up there..

FreedomPenguin 12-23-2013 01:39 AM

It's gorgeous yeah 38.6 at 55-59 in 6th. Also 5th @ 48 I think yielded same results. Here's a pic without tapatalk ruining it's resolution
I was going up and down steep mountains at -20 to 30 degree temps. Can't imagine mpg on dry Flat 0* temp (better compression)? But also denser air to go through.

In ohio I'm getting 30mpg. I love it!. Gas is cheaper, getting ton more mpg also insurance dropped 100 a month in Ohio. 1 1/2 years I'm 25, car will depreciate and my accident will fall off

Life's getting better!. I have a garage for car now too, though unless it hails I probably wouldn't use it as it's kind of tight squeeze...

Newman 01-09-2014 03:59 PM

congards!
I am waiting for that 25 year insurance improvement too. it should really help.

I am at 150k and loving my car still, I did a few mods recently, removed the OEM audio + sub, added a JL Stealth Box 10" sub in its place, bought a new set of OEM wheels powder coated and powder cleared for 500 bucks on eBay. They are mint. Had my spoiler painted gloss black as well for 100 bucks. I then put matte black vinyl on front and back of car which you'll see in photos. I was iff if I preferred silver or black spoiler, but I think black sticks out more, I like it enough. Still original clutch, pulls same as Day 1. I will replace the breaks around 170k, did it at 85k last time, this is mostly highway miles so they are pretty good condition still. Zero concerns or burning oil going on. Really love my car.

8 year review.

165k mile review. I changed brakes at 80k and new tires, and again at 160k both brakes and tires. I did coolant, and plugs, and manual gear lube @ 100k. At 165k I put an AEM dry flow filter in car, new spark plugs (NGK Ruthenium),
for first time I'm swapping oils from OEM 10k intervals at dealership. It used to be 40 bucks a change for stock oil/filter. They just upped price to 55 before tax, so 60 a fill. Just ordered Amsoil signature oil+filter @ 65 a fill.

Will report back afterwards, but before the plugs, few weeks ago I did a 2000 mile round trip to Florida and back, and I averaged 33.5 mpg at 70-75mph. So with new plugs, (which is running like a kitten) and new filter and soon to be new oil I expect a little better.

I am still on my original clutch with zero signs of slippage, feels just same as always. I use to rack up miles way quicker, but since my Mustang has replaced my Scion tC as my summer DD and became a winter DD car. Its splitting its usage.
I will be running 15k mile intervals Using AMSOIL signature oil and filter, from the traditional 10k oil changes I've done since day one of ownership.

Scion lost the customer by raising cost almost 20 bucks a change. I have to say, my Scion is a joy to drive still, OEM audio + and JL Stealth Box and all the work I've done including heated leather seats etc. Still a blast.
I trust the Scion over Mustang for cross country trips, Mustang will never ever be as reliable as the tC, and I'm keeping it til the end. If engine blew tomorrow I'd slap a new or used one with low miles in very next day.

No rock chips still in my paint due to PPF installed day 1 of ownership. I recommend this for any owner of a new car. Tossed it on Mustang, and 25k miles no chips either. Granted the clear bra on Scion has some staining from neglect and bugs, whatever.

Good to hear on the reliability. It will be like 10 years before I get to that mileage so hopefully it stays that trouble-free.

FreedomPenguin 08-26-2020 12:52 AM

Oh yeah, last year I put BG 44k platinum stuff in my car, the mileage was down a little and ive never done a treatment before. It gave me all my mpgs back and everything. Recommended probably every 75k miles. cost 30 bucks off amazon, but I noticed my car run way better from before the treatment. Theres two types, 44k and 44k platinum, I chose platinum even though few more bucks.

FreedomPenguin 09-11-2020 03:31 AM

Edit. I had plugs done at 100k coolant etc. I decided to swap out plugs at 165k and I switched from factory oil to amsoil signature. I tossed in Ruthenium HX's, the factory plugs after 65k was in rough shape. But still ran fine enough. After doing the switch to amsoil signature oil + filter, I am doing 15k intervals now. so 180, then 195, then 210. The car IS SO QUIET! The engine noise 90% went away. It wasn't a bad noise, just a noisy engine. She's purring, if anyone decides to spend a few extra dollars, the amsoil signature is really worth considering, extended interval and its made my car so much quiter/happier. I did the plugs before I changed oil, the oil was noticeably quieter. Getting 33.5 mpg on highway all day now

I switched because dealership hiked my oil price from 38 to 50. Its actually same price now for the better oil on the longer interval changes on amsoil signature.

@ 175k miles. I had to replace the transmission due to failed input shafts on my 13 Scion tC (received it in June of 2012) and put a new rear main seal and clutch in. Cost was 4800 OTD if anyone else needs to ever do the same. it sucked, but it drives perfect again.

FreedomPenguin 07-27-2021 12:16 AM

Tossed a TRD Axleback on it today. Man those old rusted bolts was a PAIN to get out, took me a good two hours.
I did succeed though. Nice little growl. Kind of sounds like it is purring off decel, I like it Here's two sound clips:

180k mile update, my steering rack ends was completely rusted seized, I paid 695 dollars for 2 outer tie rods, and 450 for steering rack directly from Toyota + they charged me 492 for install + alignment. im not too upset. seems fair. shes driving perfect. my previous alignment was borderline spec, but couldn't be adjusted due to rust, since im keeping this baby til its wrecked or falls off a cliff. i fixed it.

ouch, 4500 for new clutch/trans last year and another 1200 for steering rack this year. no biggie. worth more to me fixed than selling and paying for overpriced used car or new car.

FreedomPenguin 04-24-2024 07:46 PM

I am at 210k

Major repairs, new trans at 175k + did clutch at same time.
+1200 for steering rack. Thats been it ,so 5k total or so for everything in last 12 years, happy camper. I decided to buy a brother for my scion tc, it'll now serve as my winter car and my new gr86 will be my summer commuter. - albeit atrocious mpg
