Is the tC no longer a chick car?
I try and be only helpful and creative when I post on SL, and I use this forum more than FB, so hopefully I will not get banned for what I am about to say; but it reeealllyyy rubs me the wrong way when tc1 guys come in the gen2 section, with all their negativity and start talking trash.
AND please, don’t blame the OP for "starting it" he said nothing negative towards the tC1; unlike some people who came running in from the gen1 section with "and IMO no one cares about the tc2 because it’s ugly. thats why no ones talking about it. it has no hype." Why are you trolling the tC2 forums then?!? I know exactly why the tC1 has such a great aftermarket following. The aftermarket guys knew well that the people who bought the gen1, where going to blow tons of money to make their girl car, not so girly; and they ran straight to the bank with it! I have counted at least 10 different body kits for the gen1, all found while looking for gen2 lips; not even trying! I can’t name one other car, which has so many appearance changing options.
Now, let’s talk about why the tC1 is labeled a girls car. To begin bluntly, it has the body lines and style of an overweight Italian girl. It is very curvy and VERY feminine. Did it help that some people went crazy on rice wings and vtec stickers on their tc1's, trying to race everything in sight; just to prove (and usually fail) that they don’t have a girl’s car? Definitely not, but it is not the fault of a few over-zelas modders, that a feminine car was quickly labeled a "girls car."
I still remember the first time I saw a tC1 in 2005 parked outside the bar I worked at back then. I said to my female coworker, who was outside smoking with me, "Did they redo the new VW beetle already?" She said "No! That's the new Scion tC, I want one so bad!" You can argue it all you want, but if you catch a tC1 in the dark, at about a 45 degree angle from the front, it looks A LOT like a bug... And no one would argue that the newer bug is 100% a woman’s car, (1998-2010) it comes factory with a freakin flower holder!!! Needless to say, the gen1 first impression was not a good one for me, as it wasn’t for countless other males with self respect.
Now, don’t get me wrong, with a little work, the tC1 can be a good looking, somewhat masculine, ride. dhj517 has the best looking gen1 I have ever seen; but look how much work he has put in it! Did it look like that the day he bought it? Nope. And that was the OP's question: "...do you guys think the tC became a more masculine car with its more aggressive styling?" I can say without a shadow of a doubt, had they not made the car more masculine, I would not be typing on this forum, because I would not own one. If someone GAVE me a gen1 tC, I would sell it the nearest 16 year old girl, and use the money to buy a manlier car, like a Volvo station wagon. Has the tC2 lost all of its girl factor? Absolutly not! From the rear, again at about a 45 degree, the tC2 looks like a pregnant roller skate. All I can say is, at least it is only one angle I get that vibe from, and not the entire car.
When I was car shopping, the tC was not even on my list. Why? I drove a girl’s car before, and I was not going to make that mistake again (1997 Mazda Miata). I did not know that Scion had redesigned the tC for 2011, (well, I had heard, just kind of pushed it off the list since I knew how bad the first gen looked) and was planning on picking up a Forte Koup SX that weekend. Luckily for me, I was watching TV Thursday, and saw a new tC commercial. The aggressive masculine lines turned the car from a definite "NO" to a "I have got to drive that car before I get that Kia."
I would go with Toyota over any Korean brand; any American brands for that matter, but if the choice was gen1 tC Vs. anything else, for me: anything else would win, every single time. I am currently looking for a beater car to DD so I can do some work to the tC2, and keep miles off it. Guess which car, no matter how good the price, will NOT even be considered?

OMG dude! HAPPENS TO ME ALL THE TIME!
there are like 20 TC1s on campus and like 18 of them are girls

The car has short overhangs and doesn't bulge anywhere so I'm not sure why you think it looks overweight.

It IS a completely new car. The chassis code reflects the fact that it's the same product line, whereas the new xB is based off of a different car. I think you'll find that the number of parts the xB1 has in common with the xB2 is roughly the same number that the tC1 has in common with the tC2: very few.

I could not agree more.
You got me here, but it certainly seems that way. Like I said, I can’t think of another car that has so many appearance mods available. And I am sure the engineers designed the car to appeal to the masses for higher sales, I just think they missed the mark.
Here, I am referring to the "bubble" of a roof line. It looks pregnant. Or bubbly and cute. Not words typically used to describe masculinity. This is what the OP was asking about. I guess overweight was the wrong word to use.
I'm not going to go to that site. I am sure guys’ mod beetles, same as guys’ mod tC1s. This is from NY Daily News: "Although only 36 percent of new car buyers are women, they account for 56 percent of new Beetle owners." Now factor in how many men buy cars in their name for their wives/GFs. As an ex-car salesman, I think 5% is a safe number. I dont see how saying a car that is mostly purchased by women is sexist.
tC2 guys on a high horse?!?! Would you be so kind as to find me one post in the tC1 section where a tC2 guy went out of his way to find a thread in that section, just too blatantly hate on a tC1? The vice versa is pretty prevalent down here. I feel like it’s the tC1 guys on the high horse. That or buyer’s remorse. You yourself are guilty of it too. I understand as a moderator, you have a reason to be looking around here, and I am not going to take the time to look through every post you have ever made to quote you, but I am 100% sure you have said something in THIS section to make me think, "What kind of moderator, who should stay a neutral party and regulate/defuse heated conversations in the forums, would say something like that?"
I am definitely not butt hurt, please don’t twist what I wrote to make it seem that way. It does however bother me to see posts in the tC2 zone by tC1 guys "stirring the pot" if you will. There is a reason I use this forum above others. That is because of the separate zones so the tC1 guys can keep their elitist attitudes in their section, and the tC2 guys can actually help each other with ideas and tips. In this section, it seems the only time we really get off topic or bickering is when a tC1 guy chimes in with some snide, condescending remark. Most of the tC2 guys are humble enough to just ignore it, and I have been for a while now too. Just not today…

And I'm not one to ban someone for getting heated in a discussion, I'd rather finish out an argument. I think it would be stupid to ban someone for having a different view and virtually removing their ability to voice their side of things.
I am not trying to change anyone’s mind. For months now I have watched tC1 peps creep down here and say stuff like "both my windows go up and down automatically, so my car is better." It wears you out, like someone who sucks at whistling, but insists on doing it constantly. You know what I mean.
i feel honored i was said to have the best tc1. i officially like this thread even though i hope on a daily basis that some idiot rams my car so i can get a rwd coupe and slam the ____ out of it on some B-E-A-Utiful 18x10 CCW LM20's
Agreed this is an inflammatory thread from the start. What sent this spiraling out of control is what causes most flame wars. It's online and social courtesy goes out the window.
I can be an ___ all I want and not have to look you in the eye. Further, the social pressures you would normally apply to me to keep me from being an ___ aren't available online. Where you could normally adjust discussions and events to exclude me for being dumb, online discussions don't have the option to exclude people who make inappropriate comments.
It's a sad day when we can't use peer pressure to bend others to our will.

Its sad that this thread didn't take the path I intended it to.
What probably derailed the discussion was
we care and we think its awesome. or else we wouldn't have bought it, or spend countless hours on this forum talking about how to make it better.
We could've all bought a tc1, maybe 2 for the money of buying a new tc2, but we believe the tc2 is a better and superior car. If you think the tc2 is ugly, I think the tc1 is ugly just like you can find the other Kardashian good looking.
Cars evolve, and if Toyota put out something "worse" than what was already there then they wouldn't be as successful of a company. They made what was already existing better.
What probably derailed the discussion was
no one cares about the tc2 because its ugly. thats why no ones talking about it. it has no hype.

I think scion turned away a lot of it's male customers when it came out with colors like baby blue? Too many chicks started driving the car after that, it was a cheaply made sports car that girls thought they could make "cute" with little work. The TC2, although similar in design, is specifically marketed and designed for the MALE market. If you listened to their unveiling of the TC2 it sounded like they were trying to sell prime cut steaks to the hulk while he was arm wrestling thor. The aggressive styling, along with the slightly more sound designed and construct of the engine (I know TC1 guys are gonna argue with me on that) pushes it over the edge as a male only car. Their specific target is males between the ages of 21-28. It's a niche car, not a mass market car.
