Default Unknown noise from Rear Brakes

Hey guys,

Not sure if anyone else experiences this as I have heard it on my 2013 and my girlfriends 2006... when in reverse and applying pressure initially to the brakes, there is a sound like a crack / pop. It happens on both the cars when the rear brakes are acting as the primary. Could this be due to the solid rotor construction these cars use in the back? If needed I can try and upload a video clip so you can hear the noise.

Any help would be much appreciated guys!

Pads run forward 99.99% of the time, and get scrubbed in that direction almost exclusively. When run backwards, and at slow speeds this directional scrubbing makes the pads vibrate. Along with that, your rotors build up a thin layer of condensation that turns into rust. All of this together will cause that.

Thank you sir. Is it just a poor design with these cars or does it occur in all applications? Never heard it in my Mom's new Camaro or Dad's new Frontier.

I've heard of it happening on other vehicles, but certainly not many. Also, those who have the feel and ears for things like this will notice it much more than joe schmo just trying to get to work and could care less what noises his car makes. Most people don't care to attend to something like this so that's why we don't hear much about it. I wouldn't say "poor design" either, but Scion's are built with top-notch quality in mind, it's just a budget vehicle.
