Check Engine Light Issues
So, this is my second time @ my crappy dealership since i got my car in March. This time i took it because my check engine light came on Monday and it has been on for a week. The end result was that the gas tank and/or pipe that the gas flows down failed, and now they have to replace the whole gas line. My engine light was on b/c it's releasing fuel vapors into the air. I really don't know what this means, but they told me Scion has been having problems with these parts and its not considered a recall b/c it's not a saftey issue. Has anyone ever heard of this? I have never read or heard anything about Scion having problems with these parts?
There have been many reports of the VSC and/or check engine lights coming on when people left their gas cap off. This is the first I have seen of a problem with the pipe or tank. I am sure the government would force a recall if it is emitting vapors into the air.
Do you have smog checks in your state? An air quality board, district, or other government agency? If you have to get your car checked for smog at some point in the future, you want to make sure it will pass.
I had the same problem twice. First, it was the gas cap. Then, two charcol filters. it now seems to be fine. It never effected performance or gas milage. Just go with the flow and it'ill work out. No matter what you buy, when mass produced someone somewhere is going to have a problem.

No problems so far here, but does anyone else wish that there was a little more protection for the gas filler pipe inside the fender well? At minimun maybe a plastic liner like the fronts have.
Yes...thats it! It's called the charcoal filter. They said i could have caused it by topping off the gas tank, but no one knows for sure. I understand this could happen to anybody i just feel jinxed. Not to mention i hate my dealer.
There were some postings about a year ago on this very subject. Some folks would top off their tanks after the pump kicked off and would overflow into the charcoal cannister. But, who is to say that it wasn't an air bubble in the tank that caused it to burp over? The canister problem seems too easy to cause, they need to design a liquid trap into the vent pipe, IMO.
Even if it is a long drive, I'd go to another dealer. Warranty work is covered at any dealer. I can't stand my dealer, so instead of driving 5 minutes to that dealer, I drive 30 minutes to another for service. They know I come to them because of how I was treated at the first bunch of morons. When they p*ss me off, I will drive 45 minutes to another dealer. You don't owe your dealer anything. Let corprate know how you have been treated. Sometimes that helps.
