i appreciate your suggestions but frankly,.she didnt spend thousands of dollars on a brand new car to have to do her own maintenance (she even has an extended warranty). its a machine and machine breaks i understand that. its the fact that toyota and the dealership has been totally helpless in getting the problem fix. They all say its normal yet cant explain it us, or show is in writing.

you should call up Toyota/Scion and tell them your situation and how you feel the car can be unsafe. they will probably send ya to another dealership who will try and take care of you.

i am aware lexus is toyota.

toyota knows. we went to the same dealership 6 times and 2 other a once or twice. we called scion countless times. no one seems to think its possible this car has a defect.

hey, your matter sound just like what my xB does
my xB downshifts itself when going downhill and when i apply brake, and it feels like i'm applying brake twice. also, when downshifted, rpm goes up and my brake pedal softens. isn't it because power brake pump is working faster?
i think this is normal. and i believe your xA is doing the same thing.

Changes in vacuum will affect teh feel of the brake pedal BUT I wonder if the brake problem is moisture or gassing in the pads turning to steam and reducing the friction of the pads. Pumping them when that happens should release the moisture and so would having slotted or drilled rotors. I thought I read somplace that downshifting was automatic when going down hills on the autos.

it does downshift automatically, but not until you apply brake and going down fast enough
