Intake vs more MPG
HI, all these years when I bought a new car I immediately dropped in a K&N air filter, thinking that I got a liitle more MPG. Now that I bought the XA, I am thinking of installing a K&N typhoon, but I dont want to lose the great MPG that I have. If anything, I want to do mods that will INCREASE my MPG. So I am puuting the question to the XA experts, will the Typhoon mod hurt my MPG? And what can I do to increase it? My XA is used mostly for business, and I get reimbursed, and since the MPG is so good I can really make out.

if you improve airflow, you also improve fuelflow. intakes, headers, and all that nice stuff will increase airflow and increase hp which will also increase fuel consumption. you can't add air without adding fuel too.
the choke these motors up quite a bit from the factory on purpose for gas mileage. the tiny exhaust, tiny intake manifold, and tiny throttle body are there for a reason. also, notice how we get a lot of low end torque which doens't increase as the rpm's rise. that's a good sign that they have small intake passages, short duration cams, and a choked up intake system - all designed on purpose for gas mileage.
if you want a fast car, get a fast car. the 1.5 engine in the xa could probalby make over 150 hp easy with a new intake, ported head, bigger throttle body, header, bigger exhaust, and a better cam. but then you'd get 25 mpg instead of 40
