Think about it! The xB is a micro van - right? But what is the xA? It isn't really a van , it for sure isn't an SUV , it's not a sedan , perhaps a wagon. I see the xA as a vehicle in it's own catagory. Maybe you could say it is a "crossover" but between what did it cross over from?

Both vehicles are officially construed as "5 door wagons." I think that term makes more sense for the xA because it really does look more like a traditional station wagon...only about half as long!

The xA is a station wagon? About the closest thing on the road would be the Aerio but the xA is far better looking. Now you have to admitt that the xA is far less "wagon" looking than the Aerio. I guess in some ways it is a smaller Matrix or at least in basic layout , but even the Matrix looks more wagonnish. Of coarse have you ever seen some of the "station wagons" they sell in Japan!

I just refer to it as a mini-minivan.

Although on my insurance statement it says 2004 Toyota Scion 4 door sedan.

I see the xA as being a mini-wagon sorta like a Ford Focus 5 door hatchback. Honda has gotta bring over the Fit, then the xA will have some real competition to match up against.

I still think the xA is in a class all by itself. It really doesn't fully fit into any other mold{even in Japan!}. It has some elements from various types but yet is unique. And then with each person adding or changing it it becomes even more unique. Lets not refer it to anything else , it is a Scion xA!

Default What is a Scion xA?

I'd categorize the xA as a four door hatchback.

The xA is simply a FIVE DOOR HATCHBACK and the category it falls under is SUBCOMPACT.

And there is a direct competitor out there... the Chevy Aveo. It's a piece of crap car, but it's the xA's closest direct competitor.

As for the Honda Fit, it's going to be a much better car than the xA... better handling, better mileage, more utilitarian (the Fit has "magic seats") and overall more exciting... peep the trend:

Civic is more exciting than Corolla.
Accord is more exciting than Camry.
CR-V kicks the RAV 4's butt.
etc etc

The xA and xB are classified as 2Box designs. In Japan (at least Toyota) they are officially called 2Box, not Van or Station Wagon. 2Box means a slightly narrow than a sedan, but taller in height. Or "Looks small on the outside, but feels big inside."

Amen. I just searched Google Images for “Honda Fit.” If I didn’t know otherwise, I’d swear I was looking at the Aveo. Obviously the Fit will not come close to rivaling the xA’s styling. I also wonder how it will compare in value. There is not one Honda on the U.S. market that I would pay for. Jeez, a Civic Si hatch is over $20K. And you don’t even get four doors. Yup, I’ll be enjoying my xA for the next 20 years or more. Or until a hybrid version comes out.
