06' xB randomly hesitates when Accelerating..
 

So I bought an 06 xB with 145,000 miles, belts hoses and fluids check out fine the previous owner did what he could..so on the 2nd day of driving I noticed a random hesitation when accelerating from a stop or stop light normally after sitting for about 30 seconds to a minute however long the light takes or the stop. the hesitation would last about 2 seconds the rpms never jumped all seemed normal besides that first 2 seconds of take off. So I had a fuel cleansing done and it went away for a day then the hesitation came back just like before never consistent just random. So I went to Autozone and explained the story thinking it could be a sensor and he said it sounds like the mass air flow sensor is dirty so I bought some mass air flow cleaner CRC cleaner to be exact and after another day or so it hesitated only once and that was when I was stopped on a incline and never hesitated again for the rest of my drive home and I had a few more stop lights on the way, it doesn't idle rough it doesn't stall or have poor gas mileage probably tonight I'm gonna replace the spark plugs to see if that helps but I figured I'd mention it here and see if anyone else had similar issues.

I'd start with plugs/coil packs, and go from there.

throw an OBD2 scanner on it and check for stored codes. PO could have cleared a CEL prior to purchase.

Did you ever figure out the problem?

My 06 xB is doing the same thing.

Vacuum leak where? I'm experiencing pretty much what you described in my '05 xB. I've changed the spark plugs to no avail.

Vacuum leaks can exist anywhere, with the vehicle idling spray carb cleaner anywhere you think a leak could be (all rubber air hoses, etc) and see if the engine rpm changes. If it does, you've found your leak.

From my past experience, a kind of hesitation when accelerating is generally from a failing ignition coil.

Ok, I just tried this. Sprayed carb cleaner on along hoses and near the hose fittings. No noticeable change in RPM.

Oof. $50.79 for a Denso Coil Pack? Good thing it's only 4 cyl.

Sounds about right if you're going OEM for them. On the coils for the xB1 are they shiny on top? If so look carefully for hairline cracks in them. That's a quick way to identify a bad one. Doesn't mean it's not busted or worn out internally, but that's a pretty quick visual check if so. Else, sounds like you've got a lot of miles, can't hurt to replace.

Thanks, drizzoh. Just checked. They are not shiny, but I didn't see any cracks. I'll check again (when it's not raining). They are all Toyota branded so, who knows, they may be original (car is at 198k now). You're probably right, time to replace. Gotta go wrangle $200 out of the "house finance committee".

Good luck man, I know how annoying all the troubleshooting can be - my previous vehicle was constant maintenance (don't get an 03-05 3.0l mazda6 lol). Anyways, the only other thing I can think of would be a clogged cat/manifold or some kind of exhaust restriction that is limiting flow out of the motor. Definitely cheaper and easier to swap out a coil pack tho.

It is annoying, but I kinda enjoy it. We aren't in dire straits, vehicle-wise, so I won't be stranded while I work on this stuff. Plus, I've got a trusted Japanese / import specialist guy that I can go-to if I screw something waay up.

145K miles...I'd go with coil packs.

I'd be willing to bet it's not a vacuum leak.
