Engine/auto trans install problem
I installed my new engine (after over boosting my turbo), installed my transmission, hooked everything up, then i tried to start it... nothing.
I hear a whine (sounds like it is coming from the starter) I took off the starter, took it to Autozone, it passed all the tests. I then put a wrench on the crank pulley, and I cant get it to turn at all. I dont know if I messed up the install when I put on the torque converter, or something, but I cant really think of what it could be, I was hoping someone on here could give me a few tips of where to look next. Otherwise I'm afraid I'm going to have to take it out and try to figure out where i went wrong. |
was the engine allready built or did you build it?ie put the head and block together.?was all you did was drop the engine in then connect the tranny?new or used?
|
New/(used) engine is stock, with 42k miles on it, all i had to do was put my trans, starter and etc. to it. It turned with a wrench fine when I put the torque converter bolts in, so I know the engine isn't frozen or anything.

By any chance could you have installed the flywheel on backwards?
Was the engine from an auto or manual? The whining sounds like the teeth aren't making full contact |
The flywheel(flexplate) is on correctly, it's the first thing I checked, the engine was from another auto Trans

Re: Engine/auto install problem
Hello XB Boy,
Did you figure out what was causing the problem???? I'm having a similar problem with my XA. I put it all together, and the car doesn't crank, it just has a faint whine... then I saw some smoke, and found that my stainless braided clutch line melted. I'm thinking I have a short somewhere, but haven't been able to locate it... getting frustrated. Not looking forward to tearing it all apart again. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |
Unfortunatly, I havent been able to figure it out yet, Im going to take it out and try again. I am just waiting for it to warm up, its been like 45 degrees the past few days, so its almost time to get it done!

Engine/auto trans install problem
Hey XB_Boy,
I figured out my problem...felt like such a bone head. I had loosely threaded the bolt for the main ground, that goes on the driver's side motor mount. Forgot to tighten it down. Caused a poor ground. enough to power my lights/accessories, but not enough juice to power the starter. Once I tightened it up, the car started right up. Sweetest sound I've heard in a very long time(my car was down for 3 weeks!!!). Hopeully this helps you. |
could you possibly check something for me? could you try turning the crankshaft with a wrench and see if it could turn? mine wont, so I am fearing the torque converter is put on wrong or something
|
Checked it, and yes I was able to turnover the "crankshaft" with a wrench. it turned fairly easily.
Good Luck |
alright thanks, at least I know im not on a wild goose chase taking it all apart again
|
So I finally decided to stop procrastinating(and its warm enough outside) and pulled it apart, it turns out the torque converter was splined incorrectly, now i just need to throw it in tomorrow :) I cant wait to drive my xB, its been 6 months hah
