EVAP codes/ fixed at dealer/ reimbursed by toyota
So last week the check engine light came on. I took it back to the dealer where I purchased the 2006 XB and they pulled up 10 codes for EVAP system failure. They had to replace
Part #77248-21010 Holder. Fuel tank 11.15
Part #77219-21010 Cover, Fuel tank 12.01
Part #77740-52100 Canister Assy, CH 353.61
Part #77706-52011 Filter Sub- ___. 82.74
Parts total 459.51
Labor was 311.11
Tax 73.87
loaner car 14.00
Total with tax was 858.49
My XB has 52,000 miles on it and I don't have an extended warranty. The Dealer said that this was not under warranty and I had to pay for all of it.
Talking to the service rep he told me that the reason the Charcoal filter was bad was from water contamination. I asked how it could get in there and he told me that there is a vent that water can get into but they have a cover for it now. I said then its a factory defect and he said yes. I said then it should be covered by Toyota. He told me that the dealer can not make that decision so he gave me a # to call.
I called the # and started a claim stating that I should not be responsible for this charge if it was a factory defect. So it only took 2 days and I was able to get back all my money for parts, tax and loaner car. So Im getting back 547.38 so far.
The Toyota Rep said that they could not refund the labor as that was done through the dealer.
So tomorrow I'm going down to the dealer to see what they can do for me. I'm hoping for at least half of the labor back. I will let you know what happens tomorrow.

i thought the whole point of the warranty was to cover factory defects, once its up, its gone.
If Toyota isnt gonna reimburse you for labor, they arent gonna reimburse the dealer, and therefore, the dealer isnt gonna reimburse you. The dealer gets paid through Toyota for warranty repairs. Frankly, I'm surprised they refunded you any money at all with no warranty.

The dealer also has a "good faith" account with the manufacturer.. it is the dealers call to use that account. They usually use it for regular customers and people with good arguements. I say a known factory defect with a known factory replacement part.. probably has a TSB as well.. is a good argument, since you were not that far out of warranty, and since the emissions systems have a longer warranty than the rest (specifically the EVAP system.. one thing the EPA did right).. I see it as very feasible, and I congratulate you for using the resources and getting it done.. most just go flame the dealer.. but there is a system in place for innocent mistakes (to an extent).

I went and talked to the service manager at the dealership and you guys were correct. They would not reimburse me for the labor charge. I'm not mad and feel good about getting paid for the parts.
I was very polite at the dealership. The manager and I went into a back room and called Toyota together and Toyota said that they would not reimburse the dealer for the labor charge and it was up to the dealer if they wanted to do a one time good faith refund. The dealer said they cant do that.

Were you getting any lights on the dash when they pulled the codes? I have a 2006 and the black plastic canister by the gas tank had the hose break off of it. I haven't gotten any lights go off on the dash though. I just bought a replacement canister from the dealer and will be installing it over the weekend. It's only the 52011 part though, not everything.

Great info folks. Experienced the same problem on my '06 xB. The canister first failed back in Nov '06 with 14k miles on the car. Repair covered under warranty. Dashboard lights lit up again Nov '09 (maybe it's a Thanksgiving thing-ha!). Anyway, 3rd party mechanic found water in fuel filler neck with diagnostic codes P043E,P043F,P2401,02402,P2419 (same codes from Nov '06) . Pumped water out (wasn't sure how water got in!) and cleared codes for $80. Two days later, dashboard lights up again and strong fuel smell comes from car. Take to dealer this time and now 6 EVAP codes, 5 above and P0456. Fuel filler neck pipe has leak. Order part for $175, labor to install $158. Part comes in, take to dealer for install and only one code cleared - 5 original still remain. Charcoal canister failed again (probably how water got into fuel filler neck). Dealer now replaces canister and cap for $450 more. I raise stink about how this is the second time I've replaced that canister, ask if there's a TSB. Told no.
Long story short, Scion issued a TSB for the EXACT problem and part#'s mentioned in oldboxman's original post, on the xA back in Aug '06 (TSB# EG047-06). I called Scion Customer Service @ 866-707-2466 and it appears they're going to reimburse me for all the repairs (maybe even the fuel filler neck which may have been caused by the failed canister). The only issue I have now is my dealer can't confirm that the repair was done correctly this time so the canister won't fail Thanksgiving '12. I'll keep you posted.
