Grinding while shifting into second

I'm sure anyone who has driven manual has grinded once or twice. My box has 45,000 miles now and when i downshift into second it grinds. When I used to downshift into second, my rpms would increase to make the gear change smooth. Now it will just grind and then pop into gear. Anyone knows whats wrong and what needs to be replaced? Is it warranty work?

Thanks ahead of time.

Although I’m no mechanic it sounds like bad syncros. I’m sure there is no warranty after 36,000 and even if you were under an extended warranty they would consider it wear and tear or tell you that you abused it. In the meantime it’s time to learn how to double clutch.

Good luck, hope it turns out okay.

These trannies are known to have bad synchro's. Many users have taken their car to the dealer, and had a new transmission installed under waranty for it.

I have had the same problem and just a little while ago on my way home from work I think my tranny just went I have no 2nd 4th and reverse the damn thing ground like crazy so I went to 3rd then went to go to 4th and it ground like crazy and went clunk into gear and then after than there are no gears 2nd 4th and reverse. going to dealer tomorrow

double clutching is dumb :blah:. Why would you use the cluth twice? i just wouldn't down shift in to 2nd gear... now 5th to 4th and 4th to 3rd...but u go slow enough i think to just put it in N and use the brakes....Brakes are cheaper then tranny :lalala:

If the issue were syncros double clutching would allow him to use all of the gears until he was able to have repairs made... how is that dumb?

I've had this happen to my car twice now. The first time I took it in and they said it was the synchros in 2nd gear. They rebuilt the tranny and sent me on my way. The second time it did it in 3rd gear. They then put a complete new tranny in. That was a couple of months ago. The second time I took it in, the technician I talked to was kinda ____ed that they didn't do a full replacement the first time. He said that Toyota was aware of the problem and "supposedly" had fixed it. Who knows? I thought the warranty was 60,000 miles not 36,000? Or is that just on the tranny? I would take it in. The worst they could do is take it for a test drive and if it's not under warranty they'll give you a quote.

60,000 mile POWERTRAIN warrenty. Transmission is considered powertrain. And it is not a "known" problem, unless a TSB exists on it. Then it would be something Toyota "knows" about and would detail to the shops how to fix it. i.e. Gas tank filler neck cut off. Most of you would not even have that problem. But a few of the original owners did and had it fixed under warrenty.
