Help! Advice/guidance needed..P0101 P0102 P0113 P0138 P0500
I recently bought an 05 xA. Paid a mechanic $100 to check it out in his free time and said it was in good shape, He lied. Besides a butt-ton of rust underneath, it's started throwing codes left and right just after buying it.
I'm assuming he whined the codes before selling it. Anyways, I've noticed it's starting to smell like gas and idling rough at start up. I've been told when diagnosing trouble codes, work your way to the cause, start with the simple stuff first before replacing parts but I've no clue what would be the cause or where to start. Here's the phone book of codes it's pulled: P0101 P0102 P0113 P0138 P0500 -pending codes below- P0441 P0442 P0446 I just want to make sure I don't get suckered into paying for stuff I don't need when I take it to the shop. I'm sure some of these are just popping up due to another issue trouble code. BTW I'd sell it but probably not get enough to replace it. These seem straight forward enough. I had read that the xA were natorious for EVAP related issues. The rest seem like faulty sensors.
I'll try cleaning what I can first then order replacements online. Far as the evap sys leak, I pray it's something simple like a loose gascap. This lil rust bucket may make it a little longer after all. Thanks again for the detailed information you provided! |

Quick Tip: On a 13-14 Year old car, especially if you are Not the Original Owner, it is not uncommon for a previous owner to lose a gas cap. Then, they buy a generic cap at a local Auto store. Or worse yet, put the wrong type of cap just because it fits. Example: Not All oil or spark plugs are the right type just because it fits. (years ago, I remember a customer went back to the filling station and asked the attendant "Did anyone find a missing gas cap?" He brought out a Whole Box of missing caps!!) It may fit the filler tube, but it may not be the Proper Cap. Yes, the Wrong Type of Gas Cap will give you a CEL Code. (it happened to me when I bought an old used truck w/ the wrong type of cap on it.) I Recommend buying a OEM gas cap and gasket from a Dealer or Online as a Start. No Guarantees, but I would start would the simple things 1st. Especially that 2 Codes P0441, P0446 are Common to that. Codes P101, P102, Suspect 1st a Dirty MAF Sensor (located on top of your inlet tube to your Intake box. Use a proper MAF cleaner) and a loose or improper / loose fitting Intake and hoses for cracks. Code P0113, possible dirty air filter, IAT Sensor or harness.. Code P0138, possible Oxy Sensor, Intake, Exhaust leaks, fuel Injectors.. Yes, the gas cap is a cheap aftermarket cap. I'll add an OEM cap to my parts list. You brought up spark plugs. I changed them myself the day after I purchased the car. Hoping I got the right ones. It had Toyota stamped all over the box. I really appreciate all your help and advice! Thanks |
The old Ram truck I bought had a a cheap aftermarket cap. It failed CA Emissions during Testing and gave a CEL Code.
Once I Installed a OEM cap, the Code went away and it Passed Emissions on the Re-Test. I suspect you have a variety of problems. So start somewhere on the Possible Causes list and try and get as many as you can. Keep us Posted on what you find. Good Luck! ____ |

I was able to get the mass air sensor cleaned. The check engine turned off but now two other problems have come up.
1. AC blowing no cold air " keep in mind it's been parked since I bought it in March" I tested it before buying and it worked. Also the only things Ive been able to get to so far are filter and spark plug replacement, cleaned mass air sensor and repaired a busted fog lamp. Doubt I did anything to make AC stop working. 2. When I go to put gas in it it keeps stopping the pump from filling. I can squeeze maybe .30 cents into it at a time. I had read somewhere awhile ago alot of people had this issue also with my model. Beginning to wonder if this cars worth putting any money into. I can't afford these building repair cost. I still need breaks and tires. Brakes I can do myself but this car is starting to have more issues than National Geographic. I'm guessing the gas smell issue I'm having is related to it acting stubborn when taking gas. Hope it's not and entire system of components I have to replace. I have no place to jack the car up and get under it. |
Scion xA purge valve
Would anyone have a picture of an actual purge valve and an O2 rear sensor for an 05 Scion xA (taken from an xA) and not a pic from an online parts store? Googling Scion xA mostly only brings up Scion xB. I'm trying to i.d. purge valve for online purchase and they all look different and range greatly in price. Most say can be used on xA,xB,Lexus, Celica, 4runner... That seems odd to me though I know they are all Toyota but still, it doesn't sound right.
I don't want to remove mine yet because I live in apartment complex so have to schedule a time at a friend's to do so and would like to get all the parts I need in the mean time. It's almost impossible to find any info or videos online for the xA. It just pulls up the xB. |
