Loss of power, can't rev above 4500RPM

Hi,

I have an automatic 2000 Toyota BB with low mileage and well maintained. Recently, the car has lost it's power (At least what it had, LOL) and I can't rev above 4500 RPM. I have no idea where to start to find the problem. Anybody had similar problems? Any (related) advice is welcome.
Thanks,

Sven

Sounds like an electronic throttle body issue.

Our cars have cable controlled throttle bodies.

Hello Sven, Any luck? I have a 2005 XA and can't go above 3000 RPM.

I would suspect the mass airflow sensor. Might be in a default mode that allows the car to idle and rev only so high due to fuel limitation.

Had the same issue with my 05 xA, cleaned MAF, worked for a while then happened again, replaced MAF, happened again, ended up replacing the throttle body, car runs great now....

Is there a CEL light illuminated? If so have the code pulled. You should be able to go to Kragen or Aamco to have the code pulled for free. To me it sounds like you could have an issue with the cam gear (I think intake cam). This is a known issue with this engine. If so this is a repair that one can do themselves, however it is a bit in-depth. The hardest part of the repair is keeping the tension off of the timing chain tensioner using the slide lock.

Sounds like the throttle position sensor... why the entire throttle body would need to be replaced is beyond me.
