NGK Iridium spark plugs installed today
 

So I bought a set of NGK BKR5EIX Iridiums off eBay a couple weeks back. Today is 70+ degrees and sunny :P so WTH, went ahead and installed them along with my 30K oil change.

The old ones looked great. Burning clean and all four evenly colored. Gap was on the large side and there was some wear on them. The closeup is of the worst one, I called #1 starting from the left/pass side of engine looking in.

The plugs seemed to add a little zip. Started easier and idled way smoother. Feels slightly more power (back to day one HP?) needs less pedal to go. MPG will tell in a few tanks. Seems like a good investment!

I put in Denso Iridiums at about 10k miles and could feel a difference immediately. My xB would sometimes hesitate at the exit of my subdivision when cold. It hasn't done that since the plug change.

They were about $32 shipped from eBay seller "creativeperformance2004". Quick ship, no headaches.

Do not use "accustomgraffixandsigns". Bought and paid. Waited a month, no email reply, no plugs, had to file a PayPal grievance. Rip off, look at their feedback in the last month.

stew32, there is definitely a difference felt. Went to recycle the oil today and it really seems like the car feels "looser" and more responsive. Not talking 10 HP or anything, but noticeable. The old ones were well rounded. The needle pointed Iridiums should stay sharp for a while!

interesting ... i'm coming in on 45K on the box .... wonder if i should get these for the 50'th birthday haha ...

could you give a quick tutorial on how to do this spark plug change? things to check, look out for? it would be much appreciated.

I went to the dealer to have my 15,000 mile service.

I asked if they could put it some ngk iridiums since they had a promo.
They said, the car will not run right? I got bummed!!! Mabe the guys do not know anything, or don't know haw to gap them right? this is at Toyota Buena Park.

I want those plugs to save gas, will i encounter a problem??

^^^ i'm pretty sure they're pulling your leg. they just want to make money off of you by selling you toyota parts and not wanting to worry about warranty stuff ....

Wow, I call BS.

Mine runs just fine. Thats just the stealership trying to do the minimum work and get paid for it. I'm sure there is a flat rate for 15K warranty service. More work = less pay. Plugs are due @30K, bet they just did not want to do it.

Plugs (and most maintenance items) are easy DIY. Buy the plugs, gap them to .042/.044, install and call it done. Takes all of 30 easy minutes, going slow, with a coffee break. Search around this site, lots of maintenance, DIY and tech knowledge available.

evosky, yes do it! You will probably notice an even greater improvement than I did.

Dude, I'm at 66,800 on the factory Denso's. I think I'm gonna get me a set and give them a try. Maybe I was sitting around with my head in the sand, but I didn't realize Scion/Toyota replaced plugs on our cars at 30,000 miles. :doh:

I was told by a good friend of mine that if I were to install my own sparks plugs my warranty becomes null and void. Is this true?

No, just like a DIY oil change does not. Unless it is proven as the direct cause of failure, like you forgot to put new oil in. Just save the receipts for the supplies.

the dealer always wants you to believe that anything YOU do to the car voids the warranty.

that takes away from the hundreds of dollars they end up all together charging anytime you bring a car into the dealer for anything.

Stealership: noun; Place where they try to get as much money from you every visit for the least investment of time, labor and parts. Charging for services not done is acceptable.

OT, my MBZ dealer told my wife that she better change the timing belt NOW, before it breaks and totals the engine. This was at 24K miles for an oil change! She called all worried and I told her the car is warrantied for 36K and timing belt replacement is typically due @60K. Car ran fine until we sold it at 67K.

BTW, that dealer was NOT the one we purchased the new '08 from. Shortsighted idiots.
