Hi, Some times Scion xB 2004 engine have kind of noise, other than usual. I usually keep the oil level higher with 1/2" to 3/4 inch more than usual (looking at the orange color plastic marker). This I find to lower the engine noise. How hard is to diagnose an engine noise of having one or more pistons return springs abused, tired, or damaged? I do not remember to replace those in the past 10 years. Please let me know if Scion (Toyota), have a recommendation on this regard? Thank you.

First of all, when you add too much oil to the crank case, you run a serious risk of foaming the oil by whipping it with the crankshaft. This will lead to under-lubrication, loss of power and if you do it for long enough, a blown motor. You need to run the correct amount of oil - in the correct viscosity - and then diagnose and fix what's causing the noise you're covering up with too much oil.
As for "piston return springs," words fail me. I have never in all my years seen springs used to return engine pistons to position. Whatever picture you found and posted, it's not the engine in your xB. Connecting rods - driven by the crankshaft - return your pistons to bottom dead center.
I don't even know what that is or where you found that picture as pistons don't have a return spring, which means you'd never need to change them. So pretty easy to diagnose, that's not making your noise.
And why do you insist on doing things completely out of the ordinary...putting in oil so it's 1/2" or 3/4" higher on the dipstick than it should be isn't a good thing either. Toyota recommends a certain amount of oil for a reason and too much, while not as bad as too little, isn't a good thing either. You'll end up with more windage and oil foaming, potentially blown seals and any number of things. If your engine is making a noise adding more oil than what is recommended isn't going to fix the cause of the noise.

So just to clarify the oil level on the dipstick doesn't go part the top, full, mark?
Also the piston return springs are just a joke. These youtubers I watch put a set of springs in a motor to see what would happen, check it out
Hi, I am so sorry! I do a Google check. Looks like this "Piston Return Spring" is for April Fool's Day !!!!! Same like the Bearings for the exhaust!!! Please let me know how to erase this tread?
