Power Steering Fluid Capacity 2006xB
 

Anyone know the fuild capacity for the power steering in a 2006 xB - planning on changing it to some better synthetic.

Looks like people are reading but no one knows - well I guess I will get a little extra fluid and figure out how to flush out the old stuff.

1 quart should do the trick..I would use the Red Line Synethic Power Steering Fluid!

Nope got something better - Synlube along with engine and tranny changes and the engine oil is good for 150,000 miles.

Not sure I buy the 150,000 mile thing

Its all based on non-petroleum based lubricant - no sulfer compounds to break down into acids. Figure if they are good enough for the lunar rover should be good for a xB. Big thing is it lowers the wear and makes is last longer. I have not had oil realated failures with my cars only rust problems.

First I've heard of Synlube. Checked out the website and it looks like you can almost get a maintenance free car - what's left? Lube and washer fliuid? Be interested to calculate total conversion of all fluids.....

$275 for engine oil, manual transmission, power steering - I didn't think the coolant flush was necessary. Another thing is you get PTFE, Moly and Graphite in the lube so you get all the stuff that is supposed to work to improve efficiency and a filter that lasts 3 years 36,000 miles for the xB engine. They recommend changing over at about 3000 miles. Biggest plus is not having to deal with oil changes and getting rid of the waste oil - I have a collection of it going back 12 years waiting for a recycling place to open nearby from my last car.

I'd say drain as much as possible and replace that same amount.

I may try draining the hoses at the rack end or run the pump a little by hand and catch the return oil with a hose stuffed into the return line.

FYI looks like the power steering holds 500 ml of fluid and draining the fluid by the return hose seems to work well. You can't get much out of the reservior. You can pump it through the system by turning the steering wheel back and forth with the engine off. The original fluid was already turning dark after 3821 miles.

Im just curious (sorry I know this is an old thread) Where you were able to find the exact fluid capacity? I need to refrence the exact info from where it came from. I would seriously appreciate it. Its strange that its not easily found. Maybe it wasnt intended to be drained to begin with idk. But if I could get that link to info that would be great and very helpful. Thanx!

The repair manual doesn't specify capacity. It just says to reference the "cold" or "hot" line on your reservoir, depending on the temperature of your fluid. Capacity is probably in or around one pint because a quart of ATF is enough to change it twice.

It's not a good idea to drain, then refill. A few air bubbles can be purged from the system but too much air can emulsify the liquid. It's best to simultaneously add new fluid to the reservoir as you drain old fluid from the low pressure return hose. Preventing the reservoir from running dry will minimize air in the system.
