Belt Squealling with Greddy Supercharger

I just installed my Greddy Supercharger this weekend and I have a bit of a propblem: When I accelerate at full throttle or beyond 4000rpm one of the pulley belts starts to squeal. The tension of the altenator to supercharger belt had been reduced since the install and 20-ish mile test drive. I've since tightened it to the proper tension. I have yet to troubleshoot the lower serpentine pulley as I ran out of daylight/time. Both belts are new (they came packaged with the supercharger). So the issue may be that the lower serpentine belt has stretched a wee and needs to be adjusted. That may be the proplem, but does anyone have any other suggestions? Clearence is fine all around the S/C and belts. I only have about 30 miles on the supercharger so far.

Well congrats Shawn on getting the SC installed. Now i have to ask stupid questions. Your sure it's the belts squeeking and not the SC whinning?( not there to hear it myself so, and i know the two sounds are completely different but i had to ask) Did you try putting belt dressing on? Can you tell if the squeeking is causing any power loss? How is the new hp? Last question is just for knowlege. I'll keep thinking thou. :tap:

mill0048 05-15-2006 10:51 AM

Thanks! I knew someone was going to ask :P but yeah, I'm sure it's not the whine. You can hear that too. What is belt dressing? I thought your not supposed to get them wet, or they definately will slip and squeal. I'm sure the squeaking is a problem, it feels the same as when you wheels spin; the engine revs quicker but you're acceleration doesn't match it. As for the power, It's nice, but not what I expected. It's a little disappointing so far, but that may change once I can take it above 4k rpnm or put spurs to it in first :P

Here is what belt dressing is suposed to do. Belt Dressing is specially formulated spray to add belt traction and stop slips and squeaks. But as with most things some people say it works and others say stay away from it. I wouldn't use the belt dressing until it's the last option, just to be safe. While doing some reaserch on the belt dressing a few place's said that you most likely just have a loose belt, like you stated in the first post.

You may try PMing Eight08customs (marshall) or Rocket and see if they have any ideas, since both have the SC. I will keep thinking of other idea's for yeah, please keep us updated on what you find.

your lower belt is slipping.

mill0048 05-15-2006 05:00 PM

^ I think that's it. I turned the AC on for the first time with the SC and it sqealed just to accelerate in first (happened once, but up until now, it's never happened in low RPMs). Someone at work thought it might be a leak or loss of boost pressure. One even suggested it being normal, but it's clearly not. I'll check tonite as long as it doesn't rain. Otherwise, it'll be low (RPM) and slow... :(

dgHotLava 05-15-2006 05:53 PM

i will warn you that tightening the lower belt could be a pain in the arse with the SC.

and those that thought it was boost loos or normal, prolly should never work on cars...lol

mill0048 05-16-2006 01:22 AM

You don't need to warn me, I put it on. :P It' actually not that bad...

ProshopXB 05-16-2006 01:27 AM

You get it fixed yet Shawn??

I completely forgot to tell you to ask the 100 year old Birthday girl, dgHotLava  Good call Dave, thats why he is a Super Mod.

mill0048 05-16-2006 02:26 AM

You know, I was going to make a comment about the 21/F but decided not too. Happy B-Day (if it really is, you trans-gendered sith-potato) :P.

Thanks for the help guys. It was the lower belt, I tightened it back to spec and it runs great! It took 20 min, and it was sooooo worth it. I was starting to get real disappointed with the lack of performance for $2500, but now I feel much better. You definately feel the added power.

dgHotLava 05-16-2006 10:32 AM

glad to hear you got it going again.

i know i have that issue with my SC. as you tighten the SC belt, it tends to pull the Alt belt loose...

mill0048 05-16-2006 10:45 AM

Yeah, we wound up loosening the ALT-S/C belt, tightened the lower belt, then tightened the ALT-S/C belt again. I'm so glad it all works... :relief:

idratherburnyou 05-16-2006 11:24 AM

Glad do see you have it running. I will keep this in mind when boost time comes for me. A few questions...Do you have any extra guages (a/f, boost, etc). Do you have a clutch installed? Is the clutch slipping yet?

dgHotLava 05-16-2006 12:33 PM

yes, yes, and yes/no(stock one slipped, clutch masters doesn't)

mill0048 05-17-2006 12:19 AM

No gauges yet. I want something clean or simple with a factory taste to it. My whole goal with this car is, good performance, good clean looks and ease of operation. I want sublte car if almost a sleeper, not a flashbang to the oculars. No clutch yet either. I'm taking a wait and see approach and so far I don't see a need to upgrade the clutch.

i'll suggest you look into it now...it can't last too long with the new boost.

you'll notice that getting up to highway speed, the RPM's will rise but the car is not getting any faster.
you'll see it happen in the upper gears, in the mid to upper rpm's.
so keep an eye on it.

and i too took the clean and simple route, i'd love to see your interpertation of it.

ProshopXB 05-17-2006 12:23 PM

Shawn if you want the stock look of the car you can always hide the guages like I did.

Thankyou very much. Upside to guages there is stealth and stock look. The downside is you can only fit three guages atmost in. I like it very much, still need to figure out what my third guage will be. This is also very easy to make, all you really need is a piece of ABS plastic, a dremel and a hole saw. (if you can dremel well than no hole saw is needed)

Very nice.
