Built me an armrest...Please give feedback
Well I slapped together an armrest today, please go easy on me its just a temporary thing. I live in Illinois and we haven't had too many nice days lately so I tried to get this done in a couple hours and it didn't do too bad but I'll make a new one this summer and take my time. I used what I had laying around as well. On the new one I won't use 3/4 inch MDF because it splits too easy and I'll hopefully do a better job of apholstering it. Just to clear up what is in the pics before you ask, there is a garbage bucket that I had to grind down the sides to fit in there and a 12volt outlet in there for my cellphone charger. In the future I am gonna make a holder for my cellphone on the inside of the lid. Please leave feedback. Like I said I am no where near a professional carpenter or seamstress so please be honest but not brutal.

really, they work for me

id say thats a fine job considering

Thanks, I am overall happy for a quick job. The only thing that really bothers me is under the lid, I can't find a way to make it look good.
|
First off did you have to modify the height. Second I noticed you made the lid the same size as the console. Third I covered mine with the lid already attached to cover the hinge. Overall for the first attempt it looks good. How does it feel and are there any adjustments to make on the next one? Glad others are willing to make stuff instead of pay for just an arm rest.

I didn't use anyones measurements or drawings. After seeing the ones posted I was getting more confused than I should be. So I just did the easiest thing, started cutting till something came about. The sides are 1/8 inch hardboard and the front, back, bottom, and bottom risers are all made from 3/4 inch mdf as in the lid. I then used cotton batting material all around it to give it some softness before wrapping it in cloth. On the lid there is memory foam on top for padding. Next time I will do a better job of hiding the hinge. I think on this one I will paint it black. My only real regret is not knowing how to apholster something. The bottom of that lid and the inside are utterly horrid. But all in all I'm happy.
|
For finished edge inside lid, use same material, a little bigger than the lid. Fold edges back under to get a finished edge and then staple/glue piece to bottom of lid. Modify this technique to get a finished edge on the bottom also, and it will cover all unfinished edges. Hope this helps

Not too bad; functional, I like the 12v outlet. It almost looks like you could fit a little comptuer in there (if you put exhaust vents in the front and rear). Good to see people tinkering.
|
Good job. Not too bad at all. Those kinds of projects can be alot of fun to do. Honestly though, I wouldn't be able to make anything that looked good enough to suit me. I'm real picky about things looking "right" in my cars, so I bought a Boomerang. I love it....it looks OEM. Granted, $129 isn't exactly cheap, but I feel it's worth it. I would not only have to buy all the materials to make that, but I'm sure I'd have a fair ammount of time invested too. Plus, if I made it, it would look like I made it. :P

dude looks good. i think just clean up the interior finish a bit.
|
It's alot better than I could have done!

I'm actually getting some good feedback, cool. Thanks everybody. :relief:

It's funny how a diy project turns into an ad for a aftermarket product.

I got my Boomerang Leather Armrest top in today and took a few pics. Looks way better than the one that it came with! It looks way lighter in color in the pics cause of the flash. It matches perfect and will look great when I get my Katzkin in.
