Default Can the door locks be programmed to automatically lock...

Can the door locks be programmed to automatically lock after you start the ignition?

This is a great, but simple, safety feature for everyone, and should come standard with all cars. I would think it is just something that would need to be programmed into the car (i.e., no need for extra parts or devices to be installed) since the Scions already come standard with remote keyless entry/locks.

Does anyone know if this is possible and, if so, have they had it done? Will the dealer charge you for doing it?

Thanks,
Dylan

Default use ur finger

can't u just hit the door lock button once ur ho gets in???
j/k
the only why i would want this is if the door have panic escape handles.(ie. if the door is locked, u get into an accident, u panic to get out of the car. can u just grab the door handle and open the door, or because it's locked u pull the door handle and the door stays put.)
u can also install an alarm the can lock ur door once it senses motion..

It's a security feature like any other. Why bother clicking your remote to lock the car when it automatically does it for you about 15-20 seconds after you shut the door?

The reason I'd like to have this feature programmed is for personal safety. How many times do you remember to lock the car once you're in it? If you stop somewhere (e.g., at an intersection; in a parking garage; at a drive-through; etc.) and may be there for some time, it's much safer to have your doors locked than risk them being open when some madman comes to try to jack your car, right? Plus, I have two toddlers and would like to be as safe as possible with them in the car.

Having the door locks lock automatically is a feature on many new cars (my wife's MINI has it). Anyhow, having it programmed to lock automatically is just like one less thing to have to remember to do when I get in my car.

If you don't want it, that's cool though.

My dad had this in his Ford Taurus. Very annoying. Let's say you get the car from a parking lot and then stop to pick up passengers. Since you have put the car in gear the doors are now locked. You then have to unlock the doors yourself so a passenger can get in.

Personally, I prefer that the car wait for me to tell it what to do. If I was driving in an area so nasty that the bad guys were trying to get in I'd certainly remember to lock the doors myself!

most aftermarket keyless entries and alrms have that feature in programming. it would require a series of relays and 1 hr labor. probably about 135 to 150 to add it factory keyless. cheaper to do an alarm. I charge 150.00 for an alarm installed and it offer more features than most brand names at twice the price. It all about the install. Bill Turner

I have this feature. It came with my KARR installed alarm system.
I didn't necessarily want it, but it's kinda neat.
When I get in and start the car, the doors lock about 2 seconds after the engine comes to life. However, all the doors automatically unlock the instant I turn off the engine.
Complete with hyper-blue flashing "armed" light...what more could you want??

If you want, I can find the phone number for KARR. The work is guranteed and they come out to your car, but as a dealer option, I think the price was too high.

Actually, in my wife's MINI, the automatic locking feature doesn't enable until you start moving in the car, going at least 15 mph, I think. Otherwise, it will also enable if you get in your car, start it, and remain there without moving for a certain amount of time. So, it doesn't automatically lock the second you turn the ignition on.

Bill, that's too bad it costs so much to add this feature to the factory keyless but I understand it if it entails more than just a computer programming fix. Since I live in the Boston area, I wouldn't be able to go to your dealership to get the $150 alarm. What brand of car alarm is it? I'm considering getting an immobilizer/kill-switch type anti-theft device (see link below) and don't really need a fancy alarm, but would probably pay $150 for one so long as it wasn't one of those that goes off when a gust of wind hits your car.

something like that with the locks would have to be looked at in the computer in the car...ud have to hook a scan tool up to check the computer door lock options on there, and if it is an option u can program/set it. but u have to hook up the car to a scan tool to check to see though.

Is any dealer willing to do that and let us know whether a simple computer programming trick will work?

The PAC TR7 will do this.
I bought one for my wife's nissan.
It's around $20 plus the two relays and the wire.
buy.com sell them.
The TR-7 Is a universal module that combines many features into one box. Carrying one TR-7 will cover more than 16 different SKU# and here is some of them:
" Low voltage trigger. Gives you +12v output from headunits that do not have a remote output.
" Alpine CVA-1005, CVA-1006, IVA-C800, IVA-801, CVA-1003 Video Bypass
" Latching outputs
" Double Pulse Output
" Pulse Extender
" Horn Honking Output
" Linear Actuator Controller
" Doorlock Pulse Generator
" Channel Splitter
" Pulses to Constant output
" 3 in 1 timer outputs
" Pulses to latch/unlatch outputs
" Pulses to pulse output
" Pulses to timed output
" Latching outputs #2.
" Turn on pop delay
" Delayed amp turn off

Now thats a lot of stuff in a small package with only 7 wires. Hows that possible? Its all done through programming. Microcontroller based means no potentiometer to adjust for timers. Setting the timer output is all done through programming. Trigger the TR-7 with either a (-) or (+) input. LED indicator and program switch.

In Volkswagens the doors automatically lock once you hit 10-12mph.

It'd be cool if the Scions did that, but it's not necessary. I can just hit the lock button if I wanna lock 'em.

10-15 is a lot more reasonable. The Taurus locked the doors as soon as the wheels started turning.
