Cold Cathode Rods

I have a simple question... i'm wondering if a computer case lighting cold cathode rods can be installed in our xB? my concern is the AC vs. DC power source...will it matter?

The four-pin Molex connectors from computer power supplies crank out DC (5V and 12V) so AC/DC shouldn't be an issue. (Edit: corrected voltages)

so do you keep the actual black box ... for the connection? wat wires...from the 4 pin connector will u need to connect to the positive wire of the power source?

Yes you need to keep the black box and used only the yellow wire (+12volt)and the black wire (-ground)next to the yellow. The other wire is not needed but don't cut it off. You may use it on you computer if you decide not to used it on your Scion. Good luck and enjoy the light show!

thx again... one last question...

wat wire do u recommend i tap into for the power? i know couple of the people here used the wires from their A/C control lights...but what is the best power source..cuz i do not want any possible short circuit. thx... again.

The cold cathode lights I've seen are pretty fragile, and I think they still use mercury vapor, so LED might still be the way to go. I think I've found the actual OEM source for the Scion LED kits (much cheaper) -- will post later today. But here's some info.

I think the pinout is:

1 Yellow +12v
2 Black Ground
3 Black Ground
4 Red +5v

From the photo it looks like the the light kit uses a pass-through power connector so I'm guessing there will be an extra pair of wires hooked up to +12V and ground on one of the two four-pin connectors. I think the black box is the inverter so you'll need that.

hey sithscripter,

thanks for the info... i'll appreciate it if u can post some info about the OEM LED... if the price is right...

i think all of us want to have a nice looking car with least amount of dollar spent....

but going back to my previous question... what power source should i tap into?

Randy just did that on my car. They are soooo bright!! He is going to post a "How to" on the website so check it out!!
